YELLOWKNIFE — Police in the Northwest Territories say it's believed a person was huffing propane when they were severely injured in an explosion on Canada Day.

RCMP say they were called early in the morning to a home in downtown Yellowknife after several 911 callers reported the blast.

Mounties found a person on the ground near debris from what had been a parked boat.

They say the person was in critical condition and was flown out of the city for medical treatment.

Investigators say early information suggests the person had been inhaling propane inside the boat when the explosion happened.

Photos on social media show a damaged garage in a residential area, surrounded by piles of debris.
