St. Albert defenceman Meaghan Mikkelson added a world championship to her Olympic gold medal after Canada edged the United States 5-4 in overtime Saturday in Burlington, Vt.
Canada settled for silver the last three years at the worlds with Mikkelson in the line-up.
Canada and the United States have met for the gold medal in all 14 world championships, starting in 1990 in Ottawa.
A 9-2 loss to open the 2012 tournament was the worst beating Canada suffered against the United States in women’s hockey.
Mikkelson, 27, finished the tournament with four assists in four wins and one loss.
The first female to play on a St. Albert rep boys’ team was one of 13 players on Canada’s roster from the 2010 Olympic gold-medal winning team.
The semifinals in the women’s, men’s and mixed draws at the 49th annual Tournament of Champions start tonight at 7 p.m. at the Jasper Place Curling Club.
The finals go Thursday at 7 p.m.
The St. Albert Curling Club is represented by rinks skipped by Christina Monk in the women’s division, Dale Briske in the men’s division and Doug McLennan in mixed.
The competition features 12 Edmonton and area club champions in the three divisions.

This weekend the Artistic Gymnastics Provincial Championships at the Go Centre in Edmonton will determine the Alberta team going to nationals.
The Dynamyx Gymnastics Club of St. Albert and the St. Albert Gymnastics Club will be represented at provincials.
Marisa Dick, a St. Albert gymnast with the Capital City Gym Club who achieved high performance junior status at Elite Canada 2012, will also compete for a spot at nationals next month in Regina.
Provincials are co-hosted by the Alberta Gymnastics Federation, Ortona Gymnastics, Capital City and Dynamyx.
Starting Friday, the weekend sessions run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Five Grade 12 players from St. Albert will huddle up at the 23rd annual Senior Bowl High School Football All-Star Game.
Linebacker Landon Wenger of the St. Albert High Skyhawks, defensive backs Brandon Jennings and Nathan Mitchell of the Paul Kane Blues and Andre Leduc of the Skyhawks and kicker Ideen Samadi of the Blues made the 42-player north roster at last weekend’s selection camp at Clarke Park.
The Senior Bowl kicks off May 21 at noon at Foote Field.
