The host team at the Lady Wolves Invitational settled for second place at Morinville Community High School.

Saturday’s final ended with the St. Peter the Apostle Spartans of Spruce Grove winning 49-30.

The Wolves turned the ball over several times, which limited their scoring ability, but played tough defence while taking four charges.

The 3A provincial rankings list the Spartans, 6-0 in the metro Edmonton division two league, at No. 2 and the Wolves are No. 5.

The Wolves, last year’s North Central zone champions and sixth-place finishers at provincials, are 14-4.

The Wolves advanced to their third final in four tournaments with wins of 59-28 against the John Maland Wildcats of Devon and 66-15 against the Beaumont Bandits, 1-5 in division two.

Upcoming for the Wolves is the annual alumni game Saturday and the next tournament is in Beaumont and the opening game is against the Memorial Marauders, 4-2 in division two.

The No. 6-ranked 3A Sturgeon Spirits, 5-2 in division two, and the division one Leduc Tigers (3-4) and Archbishop Jordan Scots (0-5) are on the same side of the 12-team draw as the Wolves.

The last tournament before the North Central zones next month in Drayton Valley is Wetaskiwin and all eight teams are ranked in 3A including the top five seeds.

At the Louis St. Laurent Green & Gold, the Wolves defeated the Wetaskiwin Sabres 59-56 in the final.
