Blues win big

The Paul Kane Blues ran roughshod over the McNally Tigers to kick off the division two Miles conference regular season Thursday.

The 57-0 blowout at Emerald Hills featured a pair of lengthy touchdown gallops by Grade 10 quarterback Jacob King, while Ethan Wedman caught a TD pass and ran for a major.

Alex Coulter and Bryce Davey also scored rushing TDs, Marty Raw plowed his way into the end zone and Luke Eady returned a punt to the house.

The next game is 7:30 p.m. Friday against the O’Leary Spartans at Larry Olexiuk Field.

In week one of the Football Alberta Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) rankings, Paul Kane is listed ninth and the Austin O’Brien Crusaders of the division one Carr conference are sixth as the only metro Edmonton teams in the top 10.

Last year’s Paul Kane squad finished 7-3 as the finalist in the Miles and was the Tier II provincial north semifinalist.

Minor football

St. Albert’s bantam and peewee teams in the Capital District Minor Football Association are back on the gridiron this weekend after a break in the schedule.

Sturgeon jamboree

Today’s jamboree hosted by the Sturgeon Spirits includes the Whitecourt Cats, Father Mercredi Trappers of Fort McMurray and Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie.

Larry Olexiuk Field will be divided in half for the 40-minute controlled scrimmages at 2:20, 3:10 and 4 p.m.

The first-year Sturgeon football team is coming off Wednesday’s 48-0 exhibition decision against the Eastglen Blue Devils at Emerald Hills.

The division three Gilfillan conference teams played without special teams. The ball was moved 40 yards in punt situations and for kickoffs the teams started at their 40.

Zach Froese and Nathan Brake split quarterbacking duties.

A four-pack of running backs – Colten Brenneis, Dylan Young, Myles Keiser and Addison Chaabane, a fullback/offensive tackle and defensive lineman – recorded touchdowns and Brake also scored on a quarterback run.

Chase Kobza had a big game receiving and rushing while crossing the goal line once and Young also caught a TD pass.

The defence was led by Grade 12 rookie Alex Herard, a disruptive force with two sacks. Marc LeBlanc and Reece Reaville also picked off passes.

The metro Edmonton regular season starts Sept. 13 for Sturgeon against the Ardrossan Bisons at 7:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
