Merchants at Jets
The St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets renew their rivalry tonight in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.Hall of Fame netminder Glenn Hall will perform the ceremonial puck drop at 6 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
The Saturday Night Special is one of several hockey related events during Sports Day in Morinville.
The Jets are 6-7-1 with four wins in a row and the Merchants were 4-8-3 before Friday’s home game against the North Edmonton Red Wings (12-2-1). The score was unavailable at press time.
Early in the season, the Jets doubled the Merchants 6-3 in St. Albert.
The last game for the Merchants was Wednesday’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Stony Plain Flyers (8-7) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.
The result left the Merchants with a record of 0-4-3 since their last win, 8-3 over the Flyers (7-7) Oct. 14 in St. Albert.
A depleted Merchants’ lineup hung tough with the Flyers until the home team tallied twice in the third period to even the score before potting the winner 39 seconds into OT.
Landon Bishop opened the scoring in the first and Bryce Strum and Adam Wilkins made it 2-1 in the middle frame.
Peter Corrigan added two assists as the team’s leading scorer with 21 points in 15 games.
Shots were 40-32 for the Flyers and Brandon Boughen (1-8, 4.51 GAA) was in net.
Meanwhile, the moustache-wearing Merchants have raised $3,447 towards their goal of $5,000 during Movember.
The final fundraising push takes place during the last home game of the month against the Edmonton Mustangs (9-61) Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. and half the proceeds from the 50/50 will be donated to Movember. The 50/50 will start off at $200 through the sponsorship of Aveng, a unisex clothing business owned by one of the Merchants.

Slash at home
Sunday’s contest between the St. Albert Slash and Calgary Fire starts at 12:15 p.m. at Mark Messier Arena.The Slash (10-1-1) are winners of three in a row as the top midget AAA team in the Alberta Female Hockey League and Calgary (7-4-1) is third overall.
Madison Willan, a third-year player with the two-time defending Esso Cup national champions, leads the AFHL in scoring with nine goals and 23 points in 12 games.
Jenna Goodwin and Jaden Bogden are tied for second with 14 points and Mackenzie Kordic shares second place in goals with eight.
Brianna Sank (4-1, three shutouts) and Holly Borrett (6-0, two shutouts) are co-leaders in goals-against average at 0.83.
Next weekend the Slash are in Toronto for tournament action.
Flyers in action
The St. Albert Flyers are back on the ice this weekend after a nine-day layoff in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.The midget 15 Flyers (9-2-1) play CAC United Cycle (3-7-1) today at 5:30 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and the Lloydminster Bobcats (6-5) Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Border City.
The Flyers, winners of three in a row and six of the last seven, are chasing the Leduc Oil Kings (10-2-1) for the north division pennant.
Ethan Sundar ranks among the top AMMHL scorers with 13 goals and 25 points in 11 games.
AFHL Sharks
The third home game in a row for the midget elite St. Albert Sharks is on tap tonight in the Alberta Female Hockey League.Start time is 7:45 p.m. against the Leduc-based North Central Impact (1-5-1) at Go Auto Arena.
Last weekend the Sharks (4-4) lost 3-1 to the 2018 AFHL provincial champion Calgary Fire White (7-0) and 3-0 to Grande Peace Storm (6-1-1) in St. Albert.
The first of three consecutive losses for the Sharks was 4-0 to the Fury (6-0-2) Nov. 3 in Sherwood Park.
The Sharks are led offensively by Katie Charko’s five goals and 10 points in eight games.
Next weekend the Sharks are competing in a tournament at Calgary with games scheduled against the Weyburn Southwest Goldwings, Edmonton Pandas, Surrey Falcons and Fire White.
Sabres game
Sunday the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres face off against the Maple Leafs in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.Puck drop is 5:30 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
The Sabres (1-8-3) and Maple Leafs (0-13) are ranked below the playoff cutline in the nitro north division as the top four teams qualify.
The Sabres are 0-5-2 since their first win of the season, 6-3 over the Maple Leafs on Oct. 13.
The last game for the Sabres was Sunday’s 5-0 setback to the Lloydminster Bobcats (11-1-2) of the charger north division.
The Bobcats capitalized four times on the power play, including three straight during a four-goal third period, while out-shooting the Sabres 16-3 in the third and 38-20 overall at Akinsdale Arena.
Liam Cochrane leads the Sabres in scoring with 11 points in 11 games.
Midget AA info
The next home game for the St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders is Sunday in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.The Crusaders (8-2-1) and Lakeland Panthers (3-5-2) face off at 1:30 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Crusaders, the defending NAMHL champions, and St. Albert Blues (3-4-2) tangled Friday but the score was unavailable at press time.
The Blues don’t play again until Nov. 25 against CAC Butchers & Packers (3-4) at 5:30 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
AFHL Raiders
The bantam elite St. Albert Raiders skate twice this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.
Tonight’s game is 7:30 p.m. against the Edmonton Pandas (4-3-1) at Bill Hunter Arena and Sunday’s visitors are the Red Deer Chiefs (2-3-1) at 3:30 p.m. at Kinex Arena.
The Raiders (2-6-1) are 0-3-1 since their 2-0 win over the host Lethbridge Hurricanes (0-7) Nov. 3.
Royals weekend
St. Albert Royals have home-ice advantage this weekend in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League.The Royals host CAC Volvo (4-3-3) tonight at 8:15 p.m. at Kinex Arena and the Camrose Vikings (0-6-4) Sunday at 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Royals (8-1) and Sherwood Park Senators (7-3-1) are jostling for first place in the 11-team league.
The lone loss for the Royals was 3-2 against the Senators on Nov. 5 in St. Albert.
Luke Aston leads the Royals in scoring with eight goals and 12 points in nine games.
Bantam AA games
The second of three games in a row for the St. Albert Elite Pro Marketing Blues goes today in the Edmonton Rural Bantam AA Hockey League.Faceoff is 2:15 p.m. against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers at Go Auto Arena.
Sunday the Blues (2-3-2) are in Bonnyville to play the Lakeland Panthers (6-1-2) at 1:15 p.m.
Friday’s scores between the Blues and Sherwood Park Sabres (4-6-2) at Go Auto Arena and the St. Albert Comets (2-6-3) against the Strathcona Warriors (7-5-0) in Ardrossan were unavailable at press time.
The next game for the Comets is Wednesday versus CAC Think Green Alberta (5-5-1) at 8:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The St. Albert Bears (7-2-2) also face off against the host Beaumont Braves (6-2) tonight at 6 p.m. and the CAC at 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
The ERBHL consists of 29 teams in four divisions divided into two conferences and the Bears, Comets and Blues are among eight teams in the metro blue division.
The top scorers for the St. Albert squads are Liam Fitzgerald of the Comets with eight goals and 18 points in 11 games, Adam Browton of the Bears with six goals and 11 points in 11 games and Kieran Strauss of the Blues with three goals and five points in six games.
Meanwhile, the Dec. 23 game between the Blues and Bears at 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena is also a fundraiser for the St. Albert Food Bank. Hunter, the Edmonton Oilers’ mascot, will be in attendance.
