Jamie King is joining the best of the best as the ninth inductee into the St. Albert Curling Club wall of fame.

King will be fêted at the Curlers & Sponsors Appreciation Night on Saturday. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the band starts performing at 8:30 p.m.

King, 44, joins Hec Gervais, Jackie Rae Greening, Don McKenzie, Marc Kennedy, Cathy King and Scott Pfeifer, the inaugural 2011 inductees, Dan Holowaychuk in 2014 and Doug McLennan in 2016 on the wall of distinction.

King grew up curling in St. Albert and as the last rock thrower with the legendary Hootie and Old Fish rink won 11 President’s Cups in the St. Albert men's league playoffs and the Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions in 2006, 2011 and 2013 as well as finishing second at cities in 2009.

The first club title for King and his men, a collection of vintage rockers and a deep talent pool of subs, was 1996 and the last was 2016.

King also filled in at third as sub at the 2017 cities for the championship-winning Dale Briske rink of St. Albert.

The Bellerose Composite High School alumnus called the shots on the provincial circuit as the runner-up to the Ferbey Four in the 2003 and 2005 men’s finals and was a three-time alternate for Kevin Koe: 2010 Brier and world champion, 2014 Brier winner and fourth-place finisher at worlds and at the 2015 Brier tied for fifth.

Sharks playoffs

The midget elite St. Albert Sharks host the Lloydminster Steelers in the Alberta Female Hockey League playoffs.

Game times in the north division series are 8 p.m. Friday at Go Auto Arena and 3:45 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.

The winner advances to the AFHL provincials, March 29 to April 1 at Calgary.

The Sharks (21-4-2) finished first in the north as the top team overall in the AFHL by one point over Calgary Fire White (20-4-2) in the south.

The Steelers (9-12-5) placed fifth out of six teams in the north.

Annika Neset led the Sharks in points with 23 and Brooklyn Schroeder was second with 22. Both players tied for the team lead in goals with nine.

Holly Borrett (12-1, 1.07 GAA) was among four netminders to record a league-high four shutouts and Cecelia Michelutti (9-3, 1.22 GAA) also posted three shutouts for the No. 1 defensive team in the AFHL with 29 goals-against in 26 games.
