Today’s doubleheader at Larry Olexiuk Field marks the last division two Miles conference pool A games for the St. Albert High Skyhawks and Paul Kane Blues before Monday’s playoffs.
The Skyhawks (3-2) line up against the Eastglen Blue Devils (0-5) at 5 p.m. and the Blues (4-1) tackle the Ardrossan Bisons (2-3) at 7:30 p.m.
The pool A and B crossover quarter-finals are slated for Emerald Hills Regional Park or Johnny Bright Park and if the playoffs started today the Skyhawks would play the McNally Tigers (4-1) and the Blues face-off against the Leduc Tigers (1-4).
Last week, the Skyhawks throttled Leduc 42-14 and the Blues blasted Eastglen 71-6.
The Blues rolled up 351 passing yards and 225 rushing yards against a very weak Eastglen defence. Connor Guy was 16-for-21 passing for 320 yards, six touchdowns and one interception and Jake Strakowicz completed two out of four passes for 31 yards and one TD.
Strakowicz was on the receiving end of TD passes of 65, 45 and five yards and Alex Gamble caught TD strikes of 45 and 15 yards. Shoya Lavoie and Luke Eady also scored on receptions of 10 and 17 yards, respectively.
Guy led the Blues in rushing with 107 yards on six carries and ran for a 32-yard major. Strakowicz and Mo Tarrabain also crossed the goal line from the nine and one, respectively.
In week seven of the Football Alberta rankings, the Blues cracked the top 10 for the first time this season at No. 7 in Tier II (750 to 1,249 students) and the Skyhawks are fourth in Tier III (450 to 749 students).
The Blues and McNally are competing for the second metro Edmonton berth in the Tier II north semifinals and the playoffs will determine who will join the Austin O’Brien Crusaders of the division one Carr conference in the Nov. 11 playdowns. The Crusaders are ranked sixth and McNally is unranked this week after peaking at No. 10.
The Skyhawks are the only Tier III team in the Miles and will play the Mighty Peace league rep in the Nov. 11 north semifinals
