Stick Stakes
The Select Rentals Stick Stakes is good to go Thursday morning at the St. Albert Curling Club.The St. Albert 50-plus Mixed Curling League is hosting the two-day stick bonspiel and the majority of the 24 teams are from St. Albert and Morinville.
The stick spiel features six-end games with six rocks per team per end.
Mission ringette
The next tournament for St. Albert Mission teams is the Central Alberta AA Ice Breaker this weekend in Lacombe and Clive.Games start Friday morning and the finals are Sunday afternoon.
In the six-team U14AA round robin, the Mission plays Calgary White, Zone 2, Edmonton Elite, Sherwood Park Power and Calgary Red.
The Mission are 13-4-1 overall.
The U16AA and U19AA divisions at Ice Breaker consist of eight teams apiece.
The U16AA Mission have pool play with Zone 2, Calgary Crew and the host Central Alberta Sting and the U19AA Mission are grouped with Calgary Rush, the Elite and Zone 2.
The U19AA Mission are 7-6-2 overall after beating the Sting 4-3 Sunday in Red Deer. Vail Ketsa struck twice and Lauren Millar and Liv Helland added singles.
Ketsa, Millar and netminder Jordyn Scott are Team Alberta players for the Canada Winter Games, Feb. 13 to March 3 in Red Deer. Mission coach Heather Konkin is also part of the coaching staff.
Sabres weekend
Three home games in three days for the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres starts Friday in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.The Sabres face off against the Sherwood Park Flyers (10-8) Friday at 6:30 p.m. at Troy Murray Arena and the Calgary Bisons (11-4-2) Saturday at 1:45 p.m. and Calgary Flames (11-4-3) Sunday at 10:45 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres are winners of two in a row and four of the last five games.
The second consecutive victory and fourth in five games for the Sabres (5-9-3) was 3-1 over CAC Lehigh Cement (5-12-1) last weekend at Callingwood Arena.
The result lifted the Sabres two points ahead of the CAC for the fourth and final playoff berth in the nitro north division.
Zakk Makeiff tallied his ninth goal in the first period, Liam Cochrane’s sixth goal and team-high 19th point was a shorthanded effort in the second and Michael Romeo’s seventh goal was potted on the power play in the third.
Shots were 36-28 for the Sabres with Teagan Kendrick (2-7-2, 2.74 GAA) in net.
