Peewee final
The Football Alberta Tier I peewee final between the St. Albert Riders and Calgary Wildcats kicks off today at 1 p.m. at Taurus Field in Fort Saskatchewan.Both teams are 10-0 after winning their respective league championships.
The senior varsity Riders are averaging 43.6 points scored and four against while posting five shutouts this season.
The Riders are the second St. Albert Minor Football Association peewee team to compete for Tier I provincial honours after prevailing in the Capital District Minor Football Association final 26-6 over the Edmonton Chargers (6-4) Sunday in Spruce Grove.
The 2006 Riders captured the Tier I crown by a score of 11-6 over the Calgary Bulldogs at Clarke Stadium.
The fourth provincial championship in SAMFA history was celebrated in 2015 as the Tier II peewee Riders defeated host Calgary Colts 42-12.
SLAM basketball
The bantam (Grade 6 and 7) girls’ tournament, hosted by St. Albert SLAM Youth Development Basketball, continues today at three schools.SLAM is represented by two teams and depending on Friday’s results they are in action at 9:15 a.m. at Ecole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d’Youville or Marie Poburan or at 10 a.m. at Paul Kane.
The consolation final is 12 noon at Marie Poburan and the third-place game at 1:30 p.m. and the final at 3:15 p.m. are scheduled for Paul Kane.
Sharks games
The midget elite St. Albert Sharks host two games in the Alberta Female Hockey League this weekend at Go Auto Arena.Start times for the Sharks (4-2) are 2:15 p.m. today against Calgary Fire White (5-0) of the south division and 1:30 p.m. Sunday against the Peace County Storm (5-0-1).
In the 2018 provincial final, Calgary blanked the Sharks 2-0.
Sabres at home
Sunday the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres face off against the Lloydminster Bobcats in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.Puck drop is 3:45 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The Sabres (1-7-3) are fifth in the nitro north division and Lloydminster (9-1-2) is the top team in the charger north standings.
The Sabres are 0-4-2 since the first win of the season, 6-3 over the Maple Leafs (0-11) Oct. 13 at Londonderry Arena.
The last game for the Sabres was Tuesday’s 3-2 loss to SSAC Southgate Lions (6-5-2) at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
Connor Dale and Zakk Makeiff scored as the Sabres outshot SSAC 32-17.
SSAC broke a 2-2 tie on the power play with 1:35 to play.
