Junior Classic

The third annual Marc Kennedy Junior Classic, presented by Sarasota Homes & Realty, starts Friday morning for 46 rinks at the St. Albert and Jasper Place curling clubs.

The breakdown of teams are 12 intermediate, 12 recreational and in the competitive division six U18 female, six U18 male, five U21 female and five U21 male.

Two U18 rinks – Kohn men of Sweden and Mesloe women of Norway – are competing at the Junior Classic though the inaugural Over the Pond Junior Curling Exchange, a joint initiative by Kennedy and the Nordic Junior Curling Tour.

The U21 Taitan Hagglund rink of St. Albert and a junior men’s team from Calgary are the Canadian reps next month in Sweden with games scheduled in Stockholm and on arena ice in Ostersund.

Hagglund, third Rebecca Bartz, second Quinn Prodaniuk and lead Brennin Turner were the top female team at last year’s Junior Classic and are back to play in the bonspiel’s new U21 division.

Sunday’s finals in St. Albert will include the first-place U21 men’s and women’s teams playing in the Battle of the Sexes championship.

U14AA ringette

The Western Canada Ringette Championships at Saskatoon and Warman start Thursday for the St. Albert Mission in the U14AA division.

In the 10-team draw, the Mission plays Calgary Blue, Team B.C., Manitoba Angels and Team Saskatchewan Regina Rush in pool B.

Pool A consists of the host Saskatoon Saints, Team Manitoba Magic, Team Alberta Calgary White, Zone 2 Blaze and Spruce Grove Storm.

The top two teams in both pools qualify for Sunday’s semifinals and the medal finals are 12:30 p.m.

The Mission are ranked second out of the five Alberta teams at westerns as provincial finalists. Calgary White scored the winning goal with just over a minute left in the championship match and the 3-2 result left the Mission with a 4-2 mark. The Mission also lost 7-6 to Calgary White in pool play.

Last year’s Mission team finished fifth at westerns with a 3-2 record after placing third at provincials. The team’s overall record was 34-11-6.

This season the Mission are 36-9-3 as winners of one out of five tournament finals with seven returnees in the lineup.
