The Saturday Night Special between the St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets starts 6 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
The Capital Junior B Hockey League rivals kicked off the season Sept. 22 and the Merchants won 6-5 in a shootout at Akinsdale Arena.
Both teams are in action tonight and game times are 8 p.m. for the Jets (9-5-1) against the Beverly Warriors (13-2) at Clareview Arena and 8:30 p.m. for the Merchants (10-7) against the Strathcona Bruins (10-5-1) at Strathcona Olympiette Centre.
The Merchants are 4-6 in their last 10 games after last weekend’s victories of 5-4 in a shootout against the Stony Plain Flyers (7-9-2) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena and 5-2 against the North Edmonton Red Wings (10-4-2) in St. Albert.
Connor Tupala (power play), Robert Putt and Matt Havens scored in the first period and the Flyers replied in the next period with four goals, including two with the man advantage.
Peter Corrigan (power play) knotted it at four in the third.
Shots were 23-6 in the second and 45-26 overall for the Flyers against netminder Ethan Crotty.
The Merchants had the edge in shots in overtime at 4-3.
Cam Mazur’s hat-trick and a pair by Andy Barr propelled the Merchants past the Red Wings.
Barr and Mazur opened the scoring in the first minute of the middle frame and the second goal by Mazur (power play) made it 4-1 at 6:32 of the period.
Mazur’s third goal was his 14
th of the season and 23rd point in 16 games.
Putt also picked up two assists.
The Merchants were outshot 37-34 and Crotty (7-6, 3.79 GAA) was in net.
The third win in four games for the Jets was Sunday’s 4-0 decision against Strathcona in Morinville as Colton Kucher (4-1, 1.38 GAA) stopped 24 shots for his second shutout.
Cooper Kenda, Josh Mcrae (power play) Zach Mcrae and Alex Michalcheon found the back of the net as the Jets registered 33 shots.
The teams combined for 23 infractions for 89 penalty minutes.
Brett Dubuc also recorded his 30
th point with an assist. Dubuc is the CJHL’s co-leader in goals at 19 and is ranked ninth in the scoring race.
Slash results
The second shutout in as many starts for Brianna Sank against Calgary Fire was a tidy 25-save effort in Saturday’s 5-0 win by the St. Albert Slash.
Sank leads the Alberta Female Hockey League in wins (six), goals-against average (0.85) and shutouts (two).
Alexis Butz tallied twice and the second goal was deposited on the power play to make it 3-0 at Go Auto Arena.
Shyla Kirwer, Mackenzie Butz (power play) and Tyra Meropoulis (empty net) also scored on 26 shots against Calgary (2-8-2) and Madison Willan had two helpers.
The Slash (9-3) were coming of a 3-2 loss to the Rocky Mountain Raiders (8-3-1) Friday in St. Albert.
The Raiders potted the tying marker and game winner during a 2:23-minute span shortly after Jayme Doyle broke a 1-1 tie in the third.
Willan opened the scoring in the first and Taylor Anker assisted on both Slash goals.
The Slash were outshot 20-13 and Camryn Drever (3-2, 2.01 GAA) was between the pipes.
The 2017 Esso Cup midget AAA national champions play the Raiders on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Dewinton.
Defensive Raiders
Defence is the name of the game for the St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
The top defensive team in the north division is averaging 2.2 goals against per game after consecutive shutouts last weekend at Akinsdale Arena.
Mitch Reidy (5-3, 2.05 GAA) stared down 18 shots in the 4-0 win against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers (3-12) and Evan Fradette (1-4-1, 2.12 GAA) faced 31 shots in the scoreless draw with the Calgary Royals (9-2-3).
Xavier Halterman, Austin Spiridakis, Jacob Charko and Zach Carlson (power play) lit the lamp as the Raiders pumped 47 shots on net.
Charko leads the Raiders in scoring with five goals and 11 points.
Brock Bartholomew also added two assists.
The Raiders were credited with 36 shots against the Royals.
The busiest period for Fradette was the third while tested 13 times.
The Raiders (6-7-1), tied for second in the north, wrapped up a seven-game homestand by going 5-2.
The Raiders travel this weekend for games against the Okotoks Oilers (8-3-3) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and the Royals at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Stu Peppard Arena.
Sabres streaking
The St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres are undefeated in four games after the second shutout of the season by Carson Ironside in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
Ironside (2-2-2, 2.46 GAA) faced 10 shots in Monday’s 6-0 result against the KC Squires (1-12-1) at Clareview Arena.
The offence was supplied by Palmer Strang’s two goals and singles by Jaxon Dube, Evan Arnold, Ethan Sundar and Graeme Hampton as the Sabres racked up 48 shots.
Hampton also collected three assists and Chase Visser and Tyson Greenway had a pair of helpers each.
Sundar leads the Sabres in scoring with 20 points and Greenway is the team leader in goals with 11.
On tap next for the Sabres (9-2-3) is CAC Lehigh Cement (7-5) at 8:15 p.m. Friday at Callingwood Twin Arenas.
Sunday’s game against the Maple Leafs (1-12-1) starts at 5:30 p.m. at Millwoods Arena.
