ON GUARD – Ethan Kadatz defends the net for the St. Albert Flyers, co-leaders in the north division of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League after games played last weekend. The midget 15 Flyers (9-2-1), winners of three in a row and six of the last seven, host CAC United Cycle (3-7-1) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Akinsdale Arena and Sunday's game time against the Lloydminster Bobcats (6-5) is 5 p.m. in the Border City.

Junior B games

The Saturday Night Special in the Capital Junior B Hockey is the 6 p.m. tilt between the St. Albert Merchants and Morinville Jets at Ray McDonald Sports Centre.

Saturday games in the CJHL are rare as Friday and Sunday are the traditional weekend contests.

The Jets (6-7-1) and Merchants (4-8-2) are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the seven-team west division.

The first of four regular-season encounters between the CJHL rivals was 6-3 for the Jets in St. Albert on Sept. 28.

The fourth win in a row for the rising Jets after losing five straight in regulation time was 6-1 against the Spruce Grove Regals (3-13) Sunday in Morinville.

The slumping Merchants are 0-4-2 since their last win, 8-3 over the Stony Plain Flyers (7-7) Oct. 14 in St. Albert.

Tonight the Merchants face off against the Flyers at 8 p.m. at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena and Friday’s home game against the North Edmonton Red Wings (12-1-1) starts at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.

Meanwhile, freezing rain and poor road conditions forced the CJHL to cancel all five games scheduled Friday night, including the Merchants hosting the Edmonton Mustangs (8-5-1) and the Jets playing the Flyers in Stony Plain. The games will be rescheduled.

Midget AA match

Mark Messier Arena will be rocking Friday night when St. Albert’s midget AA teams clash in the Northern Alberta Hockey League.

Puck drop is 8:45 p.m. between the Sports for Source Crusaders, the defending NAHL champions, and Blues.

The teams opened the season Sept. 30 and the Crusaders won 8-2.

In the Besa division, the Crusaders (8-2-1) and Sturgeon Sting (7-2-2) are battling for first place and Blues (3-4-2) are sixth.

In the last five games, the Crusaders are 4-1 and the Blues are 1-3-1.

Ronin Pusch leads the Crusaders in points with 15 and is tied with Carter Albrecht for the team lead in goals with nine.

Brett Reiter is the top scorer for the Blues with eight points and Cameron McConnell has netted a team-high five goals.

REM 15 Royals

The first-place St. Albert Royals in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League host two games this weekend.

Game times are 8:30 p.m. Saturday against CAC Volvo (4-3-3) at Kinex Arena and 8:15 p.m. Sunday against the Camrose Vikings (0-6-4) at Go Auto Arena.

Last week the Royals (8-1) lost 3-2 to the Sherwood Park Senators (7-3-1) in St. Albert and edged the CAC 2-1 at Callingwood Arena.
