EXTRA EFFORT - Payton McDonald-Corea of the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres (2-0-1) digs for the puck against the SSAC Southgate Lions (1-1-1) in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Thursday the Sabres host the KC Squires (1-2) at 7 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena and Friday's game time against CAC Lehigh Cement (2-1) is 8:15 p.m. at Callingwood Recreation Centre.

The Blue Guys

The undefeated St. Albert Merchants face-off against the Edmonton Mustangs tonight in the Capital Junior B Hockey League. Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena. The Merchants, a.k.a. The Blue Guys, are 3-0 and the Mustangs are 0-3-1 to start the season. The last game for the Merchants was 4-2 over the Beverly Warriors (3-1) Friday at Akinsdale Arena. Third-period markers by Brendan Passek at 1:17 and Connor Tupala at 9:12 propelled the Merchants to victory after Beverly tied it at two with three seconds left in the middle frame. Cam Mazur (power play) and Jack Langenhahn also scored. Matt Havens and Mazur had two helpers each. Passek, Havens and Mazur led the team in points with five. Ethan Crotty (3-0, 2.92 GAA) faced a game-high 38 shots and assisted on Tupala’s goal. This weekend the Merchants play the Stony Plain Flyers (3-2) Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena and Sunday’s game time against the Edmonton Royals (3-1) is 8 p.m. at Confederation Arena.

Sabres games

Thursday the St. Albert Gregg Distributors skate on home ice in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. Faceoff is 7 p.m. against the KC Squires (1-2) at Akinsdale Arena. Friday the Sabres and CAC Lehigh Cement (2-1) meet at 8:15 p.m. at Callingwood Recreation Centre. The Sabres are 2-0-1 after Sunday’s 8-2 win against the Lloydminster Bobcats (1-2) in the Border City.

Volleyball action

Today’s metro Edmonton high school volleyball matches in St. Albert start at 5 p.m. at Bellerose, Paul Kane and the SkyDome. The Bellerose Bulldogs (4-0) host the Archbishop MacDonald Marauders (0-3) in division two senior men, the Paul Kane Blues (1-3) play the Edmonton Christian Lions (3-1) in division one senior men and the St. Albert Skyhawks (3-0) entertain the M.E. Lazerte Voyageurs (4-0) in division two senior men. At 6:30 p.m. in division one senior women, the Blues (2-2) line up against Edmonton Christian (1-2) and the Skyhawks (0-4) face the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds (1-3). Meanwhile, the division three women’s match for the Bulldogs (3-1) today is 5 p.m. against the Bandits (4-0) in Beaumont.
