U19AA ringette nationals, baseball and Taekwon-Do

U19AA nationals The St. Albert Mission closed out the round robin portion of the U19AA Canadian Ringette Championship in Winnipeg with one win in eight games.

DELIVERER - Lauren Jenkyns was one of three St. Albert skips competing in Friday's finals at the 55th annual Edmonton and area Tournament of Champions at the Granite. The finals were Jenkyns versus the Granite in the women's division, Dale Briske versus the Crestwood in the men's division and Jason Tuininga versus the Saville Centre in the mixed division. Scores were unavailable at press time. Jenkyns, Briske and Tuininga are the President's Cup playoff champions at the St. Albert Curing Club. Jenkyns, who is also the third for Tuininga's rink, and Briske were last year's winners at cities.

U19AA nationals

The St. Albert Mission closed out the round robin portion of the U19AA Canadian Ringette Championship in Winnipeg with one win in eight games.

The lone victory in pool A was 5-4 in overtime against Team New Brunswick on Wednesday as Vail Ketsa’s second goal of the game was the winner.

Abby Klatt, Grace Haney and Anatonia Hood also scored.

Hood added three assists while Brooklyn Foote and Liv Helland had a pair each.

Hannah Lavoy stopped a game-high 39 shots.

Lavoy (1-4, 6.06 GAA) shared netminding duties with Kailey Cole (0-2-1-0, 5.08 GAA) at nationals.

The Mission started the 18-team tournament with losses of 9-2 to Team Nova Scotia and 10-3 to Team Ontario on Monday and 5-4 to Quebec No. 2 (BLL) and 9-4 to Team British Columbia on Tuesday.

The Mission also suffered setbacks of 6-5 to Ontario No. 3 (Mississauga Mustangs) Wednesday and 10-4 to Manitoba No. 2 (Flames) and 5-4 in overtime to Alberta No. 4 (Edmonton Elite) Thursday.

Ketsa led the Mission in goals with nine, including four on the power play, and shared the team lead in points with Haney at 12 apiece.

Hood recorded six goals and 11 points, Haney tallied five times and Helland had nine points.

The top four teams at the Ringette Alberta championship qualified for nationals and in the provincial final the Mission lost 9-2 to Calgary Strive.

This is the fifth season for the U19AA Mission in the St. Albert Ringette Association.

Last year the Mission finished fourth out of 16 teams at 6-3-1 while ranked second out of five Alberta teams at nationals in Leduc.

Two years ago, the Mission placed 18th out of 20 teams at nationals after winning bronze in 2015.

Midget baseball

The St. Albert Minor Baseball Association has added a second midget AAA team to its ranks and the head coach is a longtime St. Albert Tiger.

Brad Wolansky is the dugout boss for the St. Albert Blue Cardinals while Cam Houston continues with the midget AAA Red Cardinals in the 15-team Norwest Baseball League.

Wolansky, a catcher by trade, is also a SAMBA alumni and served in a variety of administration positions in the Tigers Baseball Association, including head coach of the senior AAA team.

Meanwhile, Terry Watson is the new head coach of the midget AA Cardinals while Sean Erikson returns to guide the bantam AAA Cardinals.

The bantam AA coaches are Roggie Bourque for the Red Cardinals and Mike Fitka for the Blue Cardinals.

VII black belt

Phil Mageau of St. Albert has been recognized by the International Taekwon-Do Federation with the rank of seventh degree black belt in Authentic Taekwon-Do.

Mageau, vice-president of the Canadian Taekwon-Do Alliance, has been active in the martial arts for almost 30 years and in 2006 established Paladin Taekwon-Do Ltd. in St. Albert.

The International Taekwon-Do Federation was formed in 1966 under the leadership of General Choi Hong Hi, founder of the Korean martial art characterized by its emphasis on speed and agility while utilizing both hand and foot techniques.
