Volleyball spikes

Today’s metro Edmonton division two volleyball doubleheader starts at 5 p.m. for the host Bellerose Bulldogs.

The men’s match is between the Mother Margaret Mary Storm (1-4) and the defending champion Bulldogs (2-3).

The lady Bulldogs (2-3) and Sturgeon Spirits (3-2) play at 6:30 p.m.

Slash games

The road to Sudbury, Ont., for an Esso Cup three-peat by the St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash starts this weekend at Clare Drake Arena.

Saturday the Slash plays the Rocky Mountain Raiders at 11:45 a.m. and the Calgary Fire at 8:30 p.m., and Sunday’s game against the Red Deer Chiefs starts at 5:30 p.m. as the Alberta Female Hockey League kicks off its third midget AAA season.

The second pre-season tournament for the Slash was the NAIT Blue Gold last weekend and the scores were 3-0 against the Edmonton Pandas, 3-2 against the Melville Prairie Fire and 2-1 against the Vancouver Comets. The Slash beat the Comets in the last two Pacific Region best-of-three national qualifiers.

The Slash were without four forwards for the tournament as third-year Isabelle Lajoie, second-year Jaden Bogden and first-year players Mackenzie Kordic and Brooklyn Schroeder attended the U18 Team Alberta tryouts.

Friday’s exhibition between Team Alberta and the St. Albert Gregg Distributors Sabres ended with the bantam AAA team winning 7-3.

The first home game for the Slash is Oct. 13 against the Lloydminster Steelers at 7:45 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
