Tipoff times for Skyhawks, Paul Kane and Bellerose

The Paul Kane Blues lost the opening game 47-45 at Louis St. Laurent High School. The Blues were down 19-7 in the first quarter but rallied to lead 28-26 at halftime. A back and forth second half resulted in the score deadlocked with 30 seconds to go as foul shots determined the outcome. Friday’s score against the Duchess Park Condors of Prince George was unavailable at press time. Today the Blues play the Ross Sheppard Thunderbirds or Foothills Falcons of Okotoks at 10 a.m. at Harry Ainlay High School. The Blues, the eighth-ranked 4A team in the province, were 12-7 after Thursday’s loss. The next metro Edmonton division one game for the Blues (5-1) is Monday against the host Spruce Grove Panthers (3-4) at 5 p.m.

Game of the week

First place is on the line Monday in metro Edmonton division one women’s basketball when the St. Albert Skyhawks visit the Jasper Place Rebels.

Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. for the 8-0 Skyhawks and 7-1 Rebels.

The last tilt between the 2018 league finalists – 68-58 for the Skyhawks in the division one championship at Jasper Place – was 66-52 for the Rebels in the third-place game at the 37th annual REB Invitational on Dec. 15.

The Skyhawks also beat the Rebels 58-56 in last year’s bronze-medal match at the 4A provincials in Medicine Hat.

The first 4A provincial ranking period of the season listed the Skyhawks No. 1 and the Rebels No. 6.

The second of three rankings by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association will be released Friday.

The Skyhawks are 19-5 overall after downing the No. 10-ranked Salisbury Sabres (5-2) in league play 76-48 Wednesday at the SkyDome.

Next weekend the Skyhawks are hosting a six-team No Frills tournament with the Rebels, Archbishop MacDonald Marauders, Lindsay Thurber Raiders of Red Deer, St. Mary’s Saints of Calgary and Medicine Hat Kwahommies competing. Each team has three games scheduled and there is no final. The Skyhawks play Friday against Medicine Hat at 7:45 p.m. and Saturday against Lindsay Thurber at 11:45 a.m. and St. Mary’s at 3:15 p.m.

The last home game for the Skyhawks before the Feb. 25 quarter-finals is Feb. 20 against the Paul Kane Blues (5-1) at 6:30 p.m.

Division two men

League play continues next week for the Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Skyhawks in metro Edmonton division two men’s basketball.

Monday the Skyhawks visit the Spruce Grove Panthers (6-1), last year’s league finalists, at 6:30 p.m. and Wednesday’s home game against the Bev Facey Falcons (2-6) starts at 5 p.m.

Wednesday the Blues (9-0) play the Memorial Marauders (2-4) at 5 p.m. in Stony Plain.

The Blues are 16-0 overall after Wednesday’s 87-71 result against the Queen Elizabeth Knights (4-4) at Paul Kane.

The Skyhawks have sole possession of seventh place in the standings after Wednesday’s 69-46 decision against the Salisbury Sabres (4-4) in St. Albert.

The Skyhawks and Blues go head-to-head Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. at the SkyDome.

Bellerose games

The Bellerose Bulldogs are the visiting teams Monday in metro Edmonton high school basketball.

Tipoff is 5 p.m. between the division three lady Bulldogs (7-1) and W.P. Wagner Warriors (2-6) and 5:30 p.m. between the division two men (2-6) and Millwoods Christian Royals (1-6).

The lady Bulldogs, second-place playoff finishers the last two years, share top spot with the Lillian Osborne Legends (7-1) and the team’s lone loss was 55-38 at the home of the Legends on Dec. 17.

The Bellerose men, last year’s league finalists, are in a three-way tie for eighth place with the Memorial Marauders (2-4) and Bev Facey Falcons (2-4) for the last playoff spot in the Feb. 25 quarter-finals.
