Tigers tournament

The tradition continues for the Tigers Baseball Association tournament.

Rain this weekend is expected to dampen the spirits of the nine-team competition at Legion Memorial Park.

Since 1991, the tournament has been rained out eight times, including 2016 and three years in a row from 2011 to 2013.

Two years ago, the tournament was cancelled before the first pitch was thrown because of heavy rain on the eve of Friday’s opening game.

The only dry spot during every rain out was inside the beer gardens.

Barring any rain delays, tonight’s feature game between the senior AAA St. Albert Tigers and junior AAA St. Albert Cardinals is 8 p.m.

The midget AAA St. Albert Red Cardinals are also entered.

The 16-game schedule ends with Sunday’s final at 7 p.m.

SAMBA tournament

Weather permitting, the St. Albert Minor Baseball Association hosts its year-end rally cap, rookie and mosquito division tournaments this weekend.

The rally cap schedule consists of 18 games today and Sunday is the rain out day. The majority of the games will be played at Langley diamond.

The rookie tournament started Friday and features 41 games at seven locations in St. Albert, Morinville and Legal. The final is 3 p.m. Sunday at Grosvenor diamond.

The mosquito format consists of 33 games at eight St. Albert locations from Friday to Sunday and the final is 3 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

With 92 games on tap, SAMBA organizers were scrambling to finding umpires for the busy weekend.

Red Cardinals win

Joe Karall was armed and dangerous, striking out nine as the Parkland Twins went down swinging in Tuesday’s 4-2 win by the St. Albert Red Cardinals in the Norwest Midget AAA Baseball League.

Karall’s four-hitter over six innings against the defending Baseball Alberta Tier 1 champions at Legion Memorial Park included two walks and one earned run in the fifth.

Brady Kobitowich gave up one run in relief for the save. He allowing two hits, issued one walk and posted a strikeout in the seventh.

The Cardinals scored runs in the first and second innings and added two more in the fourth.

Ryan Marples batted 3-for-3, Mike Brisson singled and tripled, Zach Froment doubled and Colton Girard and Eric Rolheiser also drove in one run apiece.

The Cardinals out-hit Parkland 12-6, committed one error compared to four by the visitors and left seven men on base while six Twins were stranded.

The Cardinals improved to 13-3 in the Norwest standings and 18-7 overall after the team’s third win in five league games.

The Twins, who knocked off the Cardinals in last year’s provincial semifinals in St. Albert, are 13-6.

The Cardinals and Twins meet again Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Legion diamond.
