Three St. Albert metro league rugby teams have now handily reserved spots in the semi-finals of the high school playoffs for the 2014 season.
Two teams from Paul Kane High School, and one from Bellerose High School, have fought hard this week to knock off other top contenders to win the coveted metro league banner for their respective divisions in rugby.
The Bellerose women’s team has had an undefeated season competing in division 1, rounding out two games by shutting out their opponents. The first game of the season saw a 17-10 win over Bev Facey High School, followed by a 36-12 win over Strathcona High School, and ending their regular season games against Sturgeon High School, with a 27-0 win.
The ladies played their first quarterfinal game on Tuesday, May 20, against the Ross Shepherd Thunderbirds, and pulled out an easy win, 37-0. The Bulldogs play Bev Facey on Monday, May 26, at 4:45 at Ellerslie (11004 9 Ave. SW).
The Paul Kane division 2 women’s team also had a very successful season, after the first round of playoffs, boasting a record of 3-1. The women started their season off with a win against Stony Plain’s Memorial Composite High School, 29-5, followed by a close loss against the Harry Ainlay Titans, 19-24. The ladies then beat out M.E. LaZerte, 65-15, heading into playoffs against Jasper Place, and pulling out a 53-10 win.
The ladies play in the semi-finals against McNally on Monday, May 26, at 4:45 at Ellerslie. Depending on the outcome of the game, and the other semi-final game (Harry Ainlay vs. Beaumont), the ladies may have another crack at beating Harry Ainlay.
The Paul Kane men’s team had a slower season, heading into the quarter finals 1-1-1, tying with Sturgeon High School 0-0, losing to Ross Shepherd 0-14, and beating J. Percy Page 22-15. The Bulldogs faced off against Edmonton Christian on Tuesday, May 20, in the first round of playoffs, and managed to pull out a 13-5 win – sending the boys to the semi-final game on Monday, against Wagner, at Ellerslie at 4:45 p.m.
