Tier I north final
The Bellerose Bulldogs can shock the province today as the underdogs in the Tier I north final.
Kickoff is 1 p.m. against the mighty Harry Ainlay Titans at Clarke Stadium.
In Tier I (1,250-plus students), Ainlay (10-0) is second and the Bulldogs (7-3) are fifth in the Football Alberta top-10 rankings.
The metro Edmonton division one Carr conference teams will battle for the third time this season after wins by Ainlay of 44-14 in league play and 48-14 in the final.
The winner plays the No. 1 St. Francis Browns (8-0) of Calgary and the defending champions or the No. 4 LCI Rams (7-2) in the Alberta Bowl next Saturday in Lacombe.
The Bulldogs are the first St. Albert team to compete in the Tier I north final since the 2000 Carr champion St. Albert High Skyhawks.
The only St. Albert teams to reach the Alberta Bowl were the Storm in 1990, 1992 and 1997 in Tier I and the 2012 Skyhawks in Tier III (450 to 749 students).
The Bulldogs are coming off their first provincial victory in team history and the 42-14 throttling of the No. 8 Centennial Coyotes (3-7) of Calgary also marked the second year in a row for the Dawgs in the north semifinals.
Ainlay was also victorious in the north semifinals by a score of 20-3 against the No. 6 Salisbury Sabres (5-4).
The Bulldogs’ football team was formed in 1998 following the breakup of the Bellerose-based Storm with the arrival of Skyhawks’ football at St. Albert Catholic High School.
Flyers at home
The St. Albert Flyers face-off against the Camrose Red Wings today in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.
Puck drop is 4:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
The midget 15 Flyers (8-3-2) are the division leaders in the north and Camrose (3-7-3) is near the bottom of the standings.
The Flyers, winners of five of their last six games, are 3-1-1 on home ice.
REM 15 Royals
The next game for the St. Albert Royals in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League is Sunday against the Red Deer Chiefs.
Start time is 1:15 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Red Deer (6-1-2), a newcomer to the REM 15 league, and the Royals (6-2) are second and third, respectively, in the 10-team division.
The Royals are 3-2 in their last five games.
Joshua Cyr is the team’s top goal scorer with six and shares the lead in points with Ashton Blais and Adam Olsen with eight apiece.
