The St. Albert Merchants start a three-game homestand this weekend at Akinsdale Arena. The Blue Guys play the Edmonton Royals (11-11-1) Friday and the Edmonton Mustangs (7-12-3) Sunday at 8 p.m. The Merchants (14-9) are ranked second in the west division of the Capital Junior B Hockey League after Sunday’s 6-4 win against the Spruce Grove Regals (1-18-2) at Grant Fuhr Arena. Peter Corrigan, Jack Langenhahn and Connor Tupala struck on the power play while out-shooting the Regals 40-23. Langenhahn’s goal made it 5-2 with 7:25 left in regulation time. Mark Matsuba, Matt Havens and Adam Wilkins also scored, Langenhahn added three assists and Tupala, Corrigan and Havens had two helpers each. Brandon Boughen (6-3, 4.20 GAA) was in net as the Merchants rebounded from Friday’s 6-1 loss to the North Edmonton Red Wings (12-7-2) in St. Albert. The Red Wings potted a pair with the man advantage in the opening period and capitalized while shorthanded in the third. The Merchants trailed by three when Robert Putt scored on the power play with 8:35 left in the second. Shots were 36-33 for the Merchants as Boughen went the distance. The Merchants are 6-2 in eight games and 5-5 on home ice.

CJHL Jets

The Morinville Jets visit the Edmonton Mustangs tonight in the Capital Junior B Hockey League. Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena. Ten points separate the third-place Jets (13-7-1) and sixth-place Mustangs (7-12-3) in the west standings. The Jets also face-off against the host Leduc Riggers (3-19) at 8 p.m. Friday and Sunday’s game against the North Edmonton Red Wings (12-7-2) starts at 7:15 p.m. at Ray McDonald Sports Centre. The Jets are 7-3 in 10 games and 8-3 on home ice after Sunday’s 4-2 decision against the CJHL champion Wetaskiwin Icemen (16-5-1) in Morinville. Lee Gadoury, Tyler Hollett, Scott Woloshyn and Dean Jones score before the Icemen replied with a pair before the second period ended. Shots were 37-32 for the Jets as Colton Kucher (6-2, 1.67 GAA) backstopped the team to victory. The Jets were coming off Friday’s 7-2 loss to the Stony Plain Flyers (11-10-2) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena. The Flyers recorded three goals on the power play while outshooting the Jets 50-47. Luke Hall (5-5, 4.18 GAA) of the Jets was in net. Brett Dubuc and Alex Michalcheon replied with the man advantage. Dubuc’s goal was his CJHL-leading 25th in 21 games.
