SAPEC hoops
The annual St. Albert Physical Education Council basketball tournament wraps up today for 32 junior high teams at the Boston Pizza Invitational.The A finals are slated for Richard S Fowler School at 3:30 p.m. for the boys and 4:45 p.m. for the girls and the third-place games will be played at Lorne Akins School at 3:30 p.m. for the boys and 4:45 p.m. for the girls.
The B division finals are 1 p.m. for the boys and 2:15 p.m. for the girls at Fowler.
The two-day tournament features 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams and all nine SAPEC schools are represented.
Last year’s winners were the Vincent J. Maloney Marauders for the girls and St. Peter The Apostle of Spruce Grove for the boys.
Golden Ring
The 32nd annual Esso Golden Ring is underway in Calgary for seven St. Albert teams.The U10S1 Lightning, U12A Storm, U14AA Mission, U14B Thunder, U16AA Mission, U16A Delta and U19A Siege are among 187 teams in 15 divisions

Last year’s tournament champions included the U14B St. Albert Rush, 6-5 over St. Albert Shock, and St. Albert Legit was the U12B finalist.
REM 15 Royals
The St. Albert Royals travel to Eckville today to play the Hockey Central Panthers in the Rural & Edmonton Midget 15AA Hockey League.Game time is 4:30 p.m.
The top two teams in the standings faced off last weekend and the Royals (15-3-1) beat the Panthers (12-4-3) by a score of 6-1 in St. Albert.
Friday the Royals skated against the Canadian Athletic Club (8-10) at Callingwood Recreation Centre but the score was unavailable at press time.
Midget 15 Flyers
The St. Albert Flyers are undefeated in 14 games when the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League team hosts the Grande Peace Storm on Sunday.Faceoff is 11:30 a.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Entering the weekend, the Flyers (16-3-6) and Sherwood Park Squires (18-4-2) were co-leaders in the north division and the Storm (8-11-7) were ranked eighth.
The Flyers are 10-0-4 since the 5-3 loss to MLAC (11-12-2) Nov. 4.
Midget AA Blues
The St. Albert Blues are in Camrose today with high hopes of ending a four-game losing streak in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.Puck drop is 2:30 p.m. against the Vikings.
The Blues (10-6-3) and Vikings (11-9-2) are third in their respective divisions in the 23-team league.
