Friday’s pool play determined the round of 16 playoff pairings for the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The tournament draw of 102 best-of-three matches wraps up with the 3:15 p.m. finals for the boys at Sir George Simpson and the girls at the SkyDome.
Playoff matches are also scheduled for Ecole Secondaire Sainte Marguerite D’Youville and Ecole Alexandre-Tache for the boys and William D. Cuts for the girls.
The defending champions are the Lorne Akins Gators for the boys and Simpson Voyageurs for the girls and both teams won the 2016 SAPEC Tier I city banners.
Slash at home
The defending Esso Cup midget AAA champion St. Albert Slash have home-ice advantage to start the Alberta Female Hockey League season.
The Slash host the Calgary Fire at 12:15 p.m. Sunday and the Edmonton Pandas at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Go Auto Arena.
The Slash are the first Alberta team to win the Esso Cup in the tournament’s nine-year history and the first team to finish with a perfect 7-0 record.
Raiders weekend
The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders are in Sherwood Park today for the season opener in the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
Faceoff is 1 p.m. against the Kings at Sherwood Park Arena.
Sunday’s home debut against the Grande Peace Storm at 1:15 p.m. is also the St. Albert Food Bank game. Donation boxes will be located in the Akinsdale Arena lobby for fans to drop off non-perishable food items.
Admission tickets for the game will also be entered into a draw for $2,000 worth of gift certificates towards a new or used Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep vehicle. The draw will take place Sunday night.
Meanwhile, netminder Evan Fradette has been called up by the Portland Winterhawks for the weekend. The second-year midget and first-year Raider was selected by Portland in the fifth round, 97th overall, in the 2016 Western Hockey League bantam draft.
Midget AA games
The hometown Crusaders and Blues have games upcoming in the Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League.
Faceoff times are 8:30 p.m. Monday between the Crusaders, last year’s NAMHL finalists, and Leduc Roughnecks at Go Auto Arena and Tuesday between the Blues and SSAC Lakewood Chevrolet at Mark Messier Arena.
