Salute to football

Today’s showcase event for the St. Albert Minor Football Association kicks off at 9:50 a.m. with the opening ceremonies at Larry Olexiuk Field.

10 a.m. peewee junior varsity Colts versus Beaumont.

12:30 p.m. bantam junior varsity Fury versus Fort Saskatchewan Sting.

SAMFA is also collecting gently used clothing and household linens throughout the day and Value Village will pay by the pound for the items. All proceeds will go to KidSport. Cash donations will also be accepted.

Riders undefeated

The fourth win in row for the undefeated St. Albert Riders was also the closest margin of victory for the peewee senior varsity team in the Capital District Minor Football Association.

Josh Mah and James Hill combined for more than 300 rushing yards despite the wet weather conditions in the 35-14 decision against the Edmonton Chargers (0-3) at Larry Olexiuk Field.

The cold and snow played a major factor as the Riders and Chargers struggled to pass the ball and turnovers plagued both teams early on.

The first points in eight quarters against the Riders were scored off a 50-yard run as the Chargers found success with the fly sweep.

The Riders answered after Luke Bates’ interception gave the offence the ball near midfield. Mah’s touchdown dash covered 20-plus yards and he also ran in the one-point convert to make it 7-6.

The Chargers regained the lead in the second quarter with another long fly sweep and the two-point kick was successful.

Lengthy ground gains by Hill at quarterback and Mah paved the way for a short rumble up the middle for Mah’s second TD. Jamie Clark ran in the convert to knot the score at 14.

The Riders added the game-winning TD before halftime as Matty LaPierre recovered the short kickoff and Hill capped off the six-play drive with the three-yard QB keeper. Mah produced the one-point version for the 21-14 score.

The Riders rose to the challenge defensively in the second half with nose tackle Cohen Bernas as the ringleader.

Mah generated two more TDs and ran in another conversion along with Hill.

Today at 3 p.m. the Riders huddle up against the Sherwood Park Wolverines (0-3) in St. Albert.

Atom round-up
