Today at 4 p.m. SARFC (9-4) hosts the Druids (6-7) in the Alberta Cup north semifinal in the second half of a playoff doubleheader. The Edmonton Rugby Union third division men's semifinal between SARFC (8-2) and the Parkland Sharks (7-4) starts at 2 p.m.

Olexiuk honoured

The renaming of the Riel Recreation Park artificial turf facility as Larry Olexiuk Field will be celebrated today during Minor Football Day in St. Albert. The ceremony begins at 11:45 a.m. with opening remarks by St. Albert Minor Football Association president Micah Seon-King, followed by the naming announcement by Mayor Nolan Crouse. Olexiuk will address the audience that will include former players of Coach O from the bantam St. Albert Palmer 49ers, St. Albert Storm and Bellerose Bulldogs and the current Bellerose junior and senior teams. A special presentation to Olexiuk by “The Philosophers” will also take place. SAMFA’s 186 players and 52 coaches and staff members will huddle up with Coach O and Crouse for a group photo. Refreshments and social with Olexiuk and his wife, Colleen, as the guests of honour starts at 1 p.m. at the Celtic Knot. The Minor Football Day in St. Albert event marks SAMFA’s 55th anniversary and the four games scheduled involving the local peewee and bantam teams are as follows: 10 a.m. peewee junior varsity Colts versus Edmonton Seahawks. 12:30 p.m. bantam junior varsity Fury versus Seahawks. 3 p.m. bantam senior varsity Palmer 49ers versus Stony Plain Bombers. 5:30 p.m. peewee senior varsity Riders versus Stony Plain.

SARFC playoffs

The St. Albert Rugby Football Club hosts a playoff doubleheader today and the kick-off times are 2 p.m. for the third division men and 4 p.m. for the premier men. The SARFC thirds (8-2) play the Parkland Sharks (7-4) and the winner tackles the Clan (7-3) or Edson Axmen (8-2-1) in the Visser Cup final next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Ellerslie Rugby Park. The Edmonton Rugby Union champion advances to the Digby Dinnie Cup provincial final Sept. 30 at 11:30 a.m. at Ellerslie. In the premier north semifinal, SARFC (9-4) and the Strathcona Druids (6-7) battle for the right to challenge the Nor’Westers (11-2), the top team in the Alberta Cup, in the Ken Ann Cup north final next Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at Ellerslie. The Labatt’s Cup provincial final between the north and south playoff winners is Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m. at Ellerslie. SARFC is seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive Labatt’s Cup and the thirds are looking to sweep the ERU and provincial finals for the second time in three years.
