Sturgeon football
The Sturgeon Spirits huddle up against the Beaumont Bandits in Thursday’s division three Gilfillan conference semifinal.Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Clarke Stadium.
The winner plays the Ardrossan Bisons (5-0, 217 PF/34 PA) or Holy Trinity Trojans (2-4, 56 PF/165 PA) in the Nov. 1 final at 5 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
Sturgeon (4-1, 214 PF/58 PA) finished second in league play for a first-round playoff bye in its inaugural metro Edmonton high school football season.
One of the wins was 47-12 against Beaumont (4-2, 189 PF/72 PA) Sept. 27 and the only loss was 33-28 to Ardrossan in the Sept. 13 season opener.
In week eight of the Football Alberta rankings, Sturgeon is listed seventh in Tier III (450 to 749 students) and Ardrossan is third in Tier IV (449 or less students).
Midget 15 Flyers
The St. Albert Flyers skate at home tonight in the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.Puck drop is 7:45 p.m. against the Sherwood Park Squires (3-2) at Akinsdale Arena.
The third win in five games for the midget 15 Flyers (5-1-1) was 5-3 against the Red Deer Chiefs last Saturday in Red Deer.
Chase Visser opened the scoring on the power play in the first period and his second goal made it 4-2 with 5:51 in the third.
Dylan Leslie also tallied twice, including an empty-net goal in the last minute of play, and Aidyn Hutchinson put the Flyers up 2-1 in the second.
Visser and Jason Burgardt collected two assists apiece.
The shot count was 39-18 against the Chiefs (4-2-1), tied for second in the south division, and Ethan Kadatz (2-1, 4.33 GAA) was in net for the Flyers, co-leaders in the north division with the PAC Saints (5-0-1).
Friday the Flyers face off against the KC Centennials (0-5) at 8 p.m. at Castledowns Arena.
Slash games
The midget AAA St. Albert Ron Hodgson Slash are back on the ice this weekend in the Alberta Female Hockey League.The Slash (5-1) host the Rocky Mountain Raiders (1-5) Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
Sunday’s game against the Lloydminster Steelers (4-3) starts at 1 p.m. in the Border City.
The Steelers blanked the Slash 2-0 in the Oct. 13 home opener for the two-time defending Esso Cup national champions.
Last weekend, the Slash competed in the CCM NIT Showcase at Minnesota and finished 3-1.
