Sturgeon football
The last game for the Sturgeon Spirits before the division three Gilfillan conference playoffs is Thursday in metro Edmonton football.Kickoff is at 5 p.m. against the Eastglen Blue Devils (0-4) at Clarke Stadium.
Sturgeon (3-1) blanked Eastglen 48-0 during the pre-season.
The first-year Sturgeon football team has an opening-round bye locked up for a semifinal berth on Oct. 25.
The final is Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. at Commonwealth Stadium.
Sturgeon also cracked the top 10 in Week 6 of the Football Alberta Tier III (450 to 749 students) rankings for eighth place as the second metro team listed. The division two Miles conference St. Albert Skyhawks (5-0) are No. 2.
The last game for Sturgeon was Friday’s 40-6 win against the host Fort Saskatchewan Sting (2-2), last year’s Gilfillan champions.
Sturgeon led 12-0 after the first quarter, 28-0 at halftime and 40-0 after three quarters.
The Sting’s lone touchdown was a 90-yard run with four minutes remaining.
Defensive end Alex Herard recorded two sacks and converted centre turned nose tackle Riley Robertson registered one sack and three tackles in the backfield.
The first of two TDs by Nathan Brake was a 20-yard strike to the corner of the end zone from quarterback Zach Froese to cap off a nine-play opening drive.
Sean Watson’s fumble recovery at midfield led to William Campbell's 16-yard TD reception from Froese.
A 15-yard rumble by Colten Brenneis in his regular-season debut resulted in a one-yard TD catch by Campbell, who reeled in six passes for 40 yards on the night.
Froese also called his own number twice for TDs, and hit Brake for a quick TD on the first drive of the third quarter. Cole Cameron's fumble recovery inside the Sting's 10-yard line off a Herard sack set up the TD.
Brake took over at QB late in the third as Froese finished 16-for-27 passing for 150 yards and gained 113 yards on 10 carries.
Brake also rushed for 103 yards on six carries.
Chase Kozba’s jet sweep and Campbell's grab on the fade in the back of the end zone resulted in two-point conversions.
Bellerose football
A victory Friday would push the Bellerose Bulldogs closer towards a playoff berth in the division one Carr conference.Kickoff is at 5 p.m. against the Strathcona Lords (2-2) at Foote Field.
The top six teams make the playoffs and Bellerose (1-3) is seventh in the nine-team conference.
The first win for Bellerose was 14-8 against the Bev Facey Faclons (0-5) last week in Sherwood Park.
The last game before the playoffs for Bellerose is Oct. 19 against the Jasper Place Rebels (0-4) on Senior Night at 7:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
Meanwhile, the junior Bulldogs (2-1) tackle the Salisbury Sabres (2-0) today at 5 p.m. at Emerald Hills.
