RunWild May 6

Registration for the eighth annual Leading Edge Physiotherapy RunWild has been extended to Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. as organizers push hard to hit the 2,000 mark for runners and walkers for the May. 6 event.

Visit www.zone4.ca to enter the 21.1-kilometre half-marathon run/walk, five-km walk/run and the 1.3-km WildOnes Kids MaraFun. The 10 km run/walk has already hit the cap mark of 268 runners.

As of Thursday, 1,447 individuals had registered online, including 174 half-marathon runners.

RunWild officials will also accept late registrations Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the St. Albert Seniors Association at Red Willow Place. However, organizers are unable to guarantee a race T-shirt, timed race bib or finisher medal for those who register late.

The RunWild start times are 8 a.m. for the half-marathon, 8:50 a.m. for the 10 km and 9 a.m. for the five km in front of St. Albert Place on St. Anne Street.

The Marafun is divided into three races at 11:30 a.m. (pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and Grade 1) 11:45 a.m. (Grades 2 and 3) and 12 noon (Grades 4 to 6) starting in the race village at Lions Park, which is also the Victory Lane finish line for the half-marathon, 10 km and five km.

Medals will be awarded to all the finishers in the half-marathon, five km and 10 km.

The number of finishers last year were 204 in the half-marathon, 194 in the 10 km, 305 in the five km and 534 in the MaraFun as the youths completed their own marathon that started by running or walking one km at a time at their schools leading up to RunWild. So far 591 youths are confirmed for the MaraFun.

Marc Meunier, the Paul Kane High School athletic director, was the half-marathon winner in one hour, 22 minutes and 28 seconds and Colette Agnew of Edmonton was the fastest female at 1:33:15 for sixth place overall.

RunWild has also raised more than $400,000 for the Zebra Child Protection Centre and St. Albert Seniors Association and this year’s fundraising goal is $100,000.
