Storm football
The St. Albert Storm huddles up against the Lloydminster Red Dogs today in midget spring league football.Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Fuhr Sports Park in Spruce Grove. Admission is $5 for 12 years and older.
This year’s league standings have not been posted by Capital District Minor Football Association but the Storm are 2-0 after wins of 30-0 against the Fort McMurray Ravens and 33-18 against the West Edmonton Raiders.
Last year the Storm finished 3-3 and Lloydminster was 6-0.
The first of two home games for the Storm is Wednesday against the Parkland Predators at 6:30 p.m. at Larry Olexiuk Field.
The midget spring league showcases players in grades 9, 10 and 11.
A large portion of the Storm’s 52-man roster played for the 2017 junior and senior Bellerose Bulldogs in the metro Edmonton high school league.
Crude lacrosse
The season opener for the St. Albert Crude is Sunday’s junior B Tier I exhibition doubleheader in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.Game times are 12 noon against the Edmonton Warriors and 3 p.m. against the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels at Dow Centennial Centre in Fort Saskatchewan.
The first league game for the Crude is April 29 against the Shamrocks in Calgary and the team’s home debut is May 4 against the Rebels at 8 p.m. at Akinsdale Arena.
Last year the Crude finished fourth at 6-13-1 in the six-team north division and lost the best-of-three opening playoff round in two games to the third-place Sherwood Park Titans (12-8).
This year’s breakdown of divisional teams is four in the north, four in the south, four in the central and three in the east.
Meanwhile, the Crude Lacrosse Club of St. Albert celebrates its 13th RMLL season with the addition of a Tier II junior B team and Wednesday’s lid-lifter against the Warriors is 8:30 p.m. at George Hughes Arena.
Metro badminton
League play in metro Edmonton badminton ends Monday for the Paul Kane Blues and St. Albert Skyhawks.The Blues (7-3) visit the Spruce Grove Panthers (3-4) in division two and the Skyhawks (6-6) host the John Paul II Patriots (7-5) of Fort Saskatchewan and Maurice Lavallee Jaguars (10-2) in division four. Start times are 4 p.m.
Six teams in division two and four in division four qualify for the April 24 to 26 playoffs.
The Bellerose Bulldogs (2-9) compete in division two and Sturgeon Spirits (7-4) play in division three.
