Stars on ice

The Edmonton Region STARSkate Invitational returns to Servus Credit Union Place this weekend.

STARSkate, co-ordinated by the Alberta/NWT/Nunavut Section and St. Albert Skating Centre, consists of approximately 720 entries and 600 figure skaters as some do multiple events.

SASC is represented by 34 skaters and is one of 46 participating clubs.

STARSkate is the first showcase of the season for competitors in the STARSkate stream from clubs in the province and territories, and it offers opportunities for skaters of all ages to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, skating skills, free skate and interpretive skating.

STARSkate begins at Star 1 and goes up to Star 10 and then Gold events. Star 1 is for the youngest and/or new skaters and Star 10 or Gold is for the oldest and/or most advanced skaters. The typical age range is five to 18 with a couple of events for adults as well.

There is also Introductory, Bronze, Silver and Gold Interpretive, a form of skating where emphasis is placed on the ability to use skills to interpret music rather than technical prowess. Jumps are allowed but no credit is given for technical difficulty.

Skate times are 11:30 a.m. to 9:05 p.m. Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3:10 p.m. Sunday.

There is no admission charge.

Last year’s STARSkate in St. Albert, which included the zone runoffs for the 2018 Alberta Winter Games, featured 45 clubs and 43 SASC members.

U19AA Mission

The 33rd annual Wood Tournament starts Friday for the U19AA St. Albert Mission at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.

The crossover playoffs begin at 4:15 p.m. Saturday and the final is 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

The U14AA and U16AA Mission teams are not competing at the Wood Tournament, hosted by the Edmonton Ringette Club,

The U19AA Mission record was 6-3-4 after going 1-1-2 in the team’s first tournament of the season in Saskatoon.

The U19AA roster includes 10 returnees from the 2018 provincial finalists that recorded one win in eight games at nationals in Winnipeg.
