The first competition of the season in the STARSkate stream for the Edmonton region also includes clubs from across the province and territories.
STARSkate provides individuals of all ages an opportunity to develop fundamental figure skating skills in the areas of ice dance, free skate and interpretive skating.
The host St. Albert Skating Centre is represented by 43 skaters and is among 45 clubs from the Alberta/NWT/Nunavut region participating.
There are approximately 640 entries, including 65 for the runoffs and the zone 5, 6, 7 and 8 qualifiers advance to the Alberta Winter Games, hosted by Wood Buffalo Feb. 16 to 19.
Raiders at home
The St. Albert Tire Warehouse Raiders skate into this weekend's homestand undefeated in four games as the co-leaders in the north division of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League.
The Raiders (8-7-1) host the AMHL champion Leduc Oil Kings (4-8-4) today at 1:45 p.m. and the Calgary Buffaloes (13-2-1) at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at Akinsdale Arena.
The Raiders are 5-4-1 on home ice.
The top defensive team in the north is averaging 2.06 goals against per game with Mitch Reidy (6-3, 1.94 GAA) and Evan Fradette (2-4-1, 1.95 GAA) between the pipes.
Jacob Charko and Zach Carlson lead the Raiders in goals with six apiece and Charko's 13 points is a team high.
Upcoming for the Raiders is the Dec. 19 match against the Canadian Women’s Olympic Team at 7:15 p.m. at Go Auto Arena.
The Olympians are 3-3-1 against AMHL teams and the results count in the standings.
Junior B game
Sunday the St. Albert Merchants face-off against the Edmonton Mustangs in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.
Puck drop is 8 p.m. at Bill Hunter Arena.
The Merchants (11-8) and Mustangs (4-11-3) entered the weekend ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, in the west division.
Friday’s score between the Merchants and first-place Beverly Warriors (15-3) at Akinsdale Arena was unavailable at press time.
The third win in four games for the Merchants was 2-1 against the host Morinville Jets (11-6-1) last Saturday.
Matt Havens is the top point producer on the Merchants with 26 and Cam Mazur leads the team in goals with 14.
