SAMSL all-stars

The St. Albert Men’s Soccer League all-stars pushed the St. Albert Impact division 2A team into penalty kicks, only to fall short by one goal in Thursday’s friendly at Riel Park.

Terry Esposito opened the scoring before the 15-minute mark for the SAMSL all-stars.

The prolific striker with the Forest Park Rangers finished the regular season as the Golden Boot scoring champion for the second year in a row and the third time since 2015 with 14 goals, one more than Vince Bustamante of Impact Alumni.

The Impact replied with two goals before halftime.

With about 15 minutes remaining in regulation time, Dustin Wiebe finished off a slick pass by Bustamante for the equalizer.

Wiebe, the 2016 Golden Boot winner with Prestige Worldwide, shares third place in this year’s scoring race with Ryan Miller of Impact Alumni at 10 goals apiece.

In the round of penalty kicks, the Impact outscored the all-stars 5-4 after six shooters.

Esposito, Bustamante, Stephen Schiavone of the Rangers and Wiebe scored for the all-stars, while Paul Grun of the DV Youngmen and Scott Lysenko of Impact Alumni were unsuccessful. Matt Bergin of the Rangers was the goalkeeper.

Impact scoring information wasn’t provided at press time.

The result marked the second time in three years the Impact were victorious against the all-stars in penalty kicks. Last year’s score was 6-2 for the all-stars.

In the Edmonton District Soccer Association, the Impact (7-4-2) are tied for second place in the division 2A table with Les Gaulois (7-3-2). First-place Santos FC (8-3-1) and Gaulois have played one less match than the Impact.

The last match for the Impact is Tuesday against Union Espanola/Cruz Azul FC (1-9-3) at 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.

Sam Smith-Ackerl is the Impact’s leading scorer with seven goals.

Meanwhile, the SAMSL playoff tournament kicks off Aug. 12.

Group A consists of the first-place Impact Alumni (8-1-6), Prestige (6-6-3) and LADS FC (2-13) and the group B teams are the Rangers (8-4-3), last year’s playoff cup champions, Youngmen (7-6-2) and Magnitude FC (6-9).

The top two teams in the round-robin groups qualify for the two-match aggregate semifinals Sept. 9 and Sept. 11 at Riel Park.

The finals are Sept. 15 at Riel Park at 11 a.m. for the third-place trophy and 1 p.m. for the playoff cup.

The Impact Alumni and Rangers will also represent SAMSL at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier 3 championship, Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at ESA Complex.

The Rangers failed to score in three losses at last year’s Tier 3 provincials in Calgary.
