St. Albert sends flag bearers to U20 World Cup
Twelve St. Albert soccer players have been chosen to be flag bearers in this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Edmonton.
The players, aged 12 to 17 years old, will be bearing flags in the Germany vs. U.S.A. and China vs. Brazil games on Aug. 5 and the Nigeria vs. England and Paraguay vs. France games on Aug. 13 in Commonwealth Stadium.
“Whenever something like this comes up we try to participate as much as possible,” said Melody Martyn, executive director at the St. Albert Soccer Association.
The St. Albert Soccer Association (SASA) won the right to choose flag bearers for this year’s event in a nationwide ticket-selling contest run by the Canadian Soccer Association. Twelve teams were selected from within SASA and asked to pick one player each to send.
“We wanted to spread the wealth around a little,” said Martyn. “It’s a great opportunity and we were surprised to get it.”
St. Albert Impact crush the Lady Rangers – Women’s Premier
The third place St. Albert Impact met the eighth place Lady Rangers at Riel turf field Tuesday night and crushed them 5-0 in a lopsided game.
With only four games left in the Women’s Premier League season the Impact have won 10 games, lost three games, and tied once.
Third place is nearly locked up for the Impact. The challenging fourth place team is six points behind and unlikely to catch up.
Danica Blasius leads the team in scoring with nine goals this season.
S.S. Lazio Rangers fall against Rising Stars – Men’s Division 1A
The St. Albert S.S. Lazio Rangers lost a close 2-1 game Monday night to the Rising Stars in the Men’s Division 1A.
The Rising Stars’ win put the brakes on a late season resurgence by the Rangers who had won their last two games by a margin of 10.
The top of the division is clustered and still up for grabs with four games left in the season. The Rangers are only one point away from second and three points out from first.
Michael Thompson has been a big reason for the Rangers success this season. He is leading the division with eight goals this year and has looked fantastic on the field.
St. Albert Impact demolish Modena FC – Men’s Division 1B
The St. Albert Impact slipped into first place Wednesday night with a 5-1 blowout of the last place Modena FC.
The Impact (7-3-1) have been neck and neck with the D.V. Oldboys Green and Gold (7-1-2) all season long and will have to keep winning if they want to hold on to the top of the standings.
The Impact’s Mark McQuaid and the Oldboys’ Jeshua Calderon are tied for first in the league with an incredible 13 goals apiece.
On July 23 the rival teams will meet at Riel turf field for one of the most anticipated match ups of the season.
