The St. Albert Impact soccer teams had a medal-worthy showing this weekend at the Victoria Day Classic tournament that ran the whole long weekend, hosted by the St. Albert Soccer Association.
This tournament hosted 30 boys’ teams, 38 girls’ teams, and marked the beginning of the outdoor season for several programs.
The U16 Tier 1/2 boys category was represented by two Impact teams. St. Albert Impact Houle begun their tournament run with an impressive 4-0 victory over the Drillers, followed by a loss to the Edmonton Strikers, 3-1. The Impact faced off against the Strikers once again in the final, and managed to pull out a 3-2 win, and gold medal honours.
St. Albert Impact Mann lost their two first games and ended up winning in the consolation final against the Drillers, 2-0.
The St. Albert Impact U16 Tier 1 girls team was seeing some bronze medal action, after a tie with Scottish United (2-2), a win against the Saskatoon Aurora Shock (1-0), and a loss against the KC Trojans (1-0). They ended their final game against SWU 1-0, securing the bronze medal.
The U18 Tier 1/2 girls pool consisted of four round-robin games to determine medals. The U18 girls chalked up two wins against the Cochrane United Wolves, and the Calgary Blizzard Fuego, and two losses against the Saskatoon Hollandia Impact and the Calgary Blizzard Avalanche. The goals for/goals against statistics determined the medal placements, putting the Impact in third with the bronze, with 11 goals for, and 7 goals against.
The tournament was an excellent display of the St. Albert Impact’s abilities, with nine of the 13 teams earning medals. The U16 Tier 2 girls won gold, the U10 Tier 1 boys, and the U12 Tier 2 girls both won silver, and the U14 Tier 1 boys and U14 Tier 2 girls both won bronze.
