St. Albert AA ringette teams on a Mission this season

U16AA juniors

The St. Albert Mission skate into the U16AA junior season with four players returning from the 15th place finishers at the 2017 nationals in Leduc. The Mission were seeded fourth out of eight Alberta teams in the 21-team tournament after losing the provincial bronze-medal game in overtime. The Mission’s record after provincials was 29-20-3. At nationals, the Mission finished fifth in their pool at 3-3 and in the consolation round the team was 1-1. The 2018 AA provincials are Feb. 23 to 25 in Edmonton and nationals are April 8 to 14 in Winnipeg. The first exhibition for the Mission is Sept. 23 against the Central Alberta Sting in Penhold. The Mission have been accepted into four tournaments: Calgary Ring It On, Sept. 30 to Oct. 1, St. Albert Turkey Ring, Oct. 6 to 8, Bernadette Price, Nov. 10 to 12 in Saskatoon, and Edmonton Wood, Nov. 24 to 26. The Mission will also apply for admittance into the Central Alberta Ice Breaker in December at Lacombe and the Esso Gold Ring in January at Calgary. This is the fifth season for U16AA Mission in the St. Albert Ringette Association and the coaches are Travis Sawchuk and Al Henderson. The 2016 Mission placed 11th out of 20 teams at nationals for third among the six Alberta teams and in 2015 the team finished seventh overall.

U14AA tweens

Seven players are back from the fifth-place St. Albert Mission at the U14AA westerns in Winnipeg. Five of the eight newcomers on the tween roster are first years. Last season’s overall 34-11-6 record included a 3-2 showing at westerns and all three wins were posted at the end of the tournament. The Mission were seeded third out of four Alberta teams at the 10-team westerns as bronze medallists at the eight-team provincials. The Mission make their season debut at the Rusty Ring, an exhibition-style tournament Sept. 22 to 24 in Cochrane. Also on tap for the Mission is the St. Albert Turkey Ring during the Thanksgiving weekend and the November tournaments are the Bernadette Price in Saskatoon and the Edmonton Wood. The team also hopes to be accepted into the Central Alberta Ice Breaker at Lacombe and the Esso Gold Ring at Calgary. The AA provincials are in February at Edmonton and westerns are in March at Saskatoon. Eric Lavoy is the Mission head coach and his assistants are Joel Lajoie, Anj Greway, Sim Greway, Lauren Henderson and Corey De La Mare. This is the sixth season for the tween AA program in the St. Albert Ringette Association. The 2016 Mission missed the cut for westerns as the fifth-place finishers at provincials after the 2015 team wound up seventh at westerns.

U19AA belles

The St. Albert Mission are reloading for another shot at a medal after placing fourth at the 16-team U19AA belle nationals in Leduc. The Mission were seeded second out of five Alberta teams at nationals as the provincial silver medallists. Last year the Mission placed 18th out of 20 teams at nationals after winning bronze in 2015. One of the newcomers on the Mission roster is Vail Ketsa, the leading scorer for the U16AA St. Albert junior team at the 2017 nationals with 10 goals and 14 points in six round-robin games and two goals and five points in two consolation round matches. Addition team information was unavailable at press time. The AA provincials are hosted by Edmonton in February and nationals are in April at Winnipeg. This is the fifth season for the U19AA Mission in the St. Albert Ringette Association.
