Senior worlds

The 17th annual World Senior (50-plus) Curling Championships start Saturday for Dan Holowaychuk of St. Albert on the Team Canada rink skipped by Wade White.

The Ostersund Arena in Sweden is the site for the men’s and women’s senior tournaments as well as the world doubles at the same time.

The 28-team men’s draw is divided into four pools and Canada is grouped with Belgium, England, France, Germany, Switzerland and Turkey.

Last year in Lethbridge, Sweden edged Canada, skipped by Bryan Cochrane of Ontario, 5-4 in an extra end for the championship and Ireland defeated Germany for third place.

Cochrane won the 2016 and 2018 nationals while White, with Barry Chwedoruk at third, Holowaychuk at second and lead George White, qualified for worlds as the 2017 champions.

The Alberta reps at the 2018 nationals in Stratford, Ont. finished tied for fifth at 6-4 in the championship pool.

Holowaychuk, 55, the alternate for the iconic Ferbey Four, was inducted into St. Albert Curling Club wall of fame in 2014.
