Gareth Jones Cup
Bragging rights are at stake today as the Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues battle for the Gareth Jones Cup in high school men’s rugby.
The metro Edmonton division two match kicks off at 4:45 p.m. at St. Albert Rugby Football Club.
The seventh annual Gareth Jones Cup honours the memory of one of the Nervous Nine founding members of SARFC and its first president.
Jones also coached Paul Kane’s first rugby team in 1980 and was inducted into the Alberta Rugby Hall of Fame in 2005.
Two years ago, Jones and Roger Scott were the first SARFC members to achieve status in the Edmonton Rugby Union Hall of Fame.
Jones died Dec. 31, 2017, at the age of 78.
The third Gareth Jones Cup victory in a row for Bellerose over Paul Kane was 25-10 last year with a lineup that included St. Albert Catholic High School student athletes.
Bellerose, the defending division two champion, is 0-2 (19 PF/71 PA) in league play and Monday’s match against the J. Percy Page Panthers was postponed because of the no-show by the referee at Ellerslie Rugby Park.
Paul Kane is 2-1 (109 PF/50 PA) after Monday’s 24-6 win over the St. Francis Xavier Rams (1-2) at Pirates Rugby Club.
Meanwhile, the Sturgeon Spirits improved to 3-0 (120 PF/36 PA) as the top division two men’s team in Monday’s 40-29 outcome against the Archbishop Jordan Scots (2-1) at SARFC.
Last week Sturgeon shutout Bellerose 38-0 and the team's next match is against the Panthers (0-2) today at 4:45 p.m. at Ellerslie.
The last match for Sturgeon before the playoffs is May 23 against Paul Kane at 4:45 p.m. at SARFC.
Impact results
The St. Albert Impact 4 division 1A women’s team dropped a 4-3 decision to the Spruce Grove Saints on Monday in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.
Down 2-0 early to the Saints, Kelsey Carter scored before halftime and Shyanne Walton tallied twice to give the 2018 Tier 1 provincial champions the lead.
The Saints answered with two goals off corner kicks for the victory at Fuhr Sports Park.
The loss was the first for the Impact after the 3-0 forfeit win against Olympia FC and 2-0 victory against SW Fever as Anastacia Lalonde pocked the shutout and U17 call-ups' Abbey Elbert and Sarah Hay scored Saturday at Coronation Park.
The next match is May 25 against Wind at 12 noon at Goldstick Park.
In the premier women’s division, Impact 3 fell 3-2 to Angels Scottish SC 2 Sunday at Millwoods Park.
Down 2-0 at halftime, the Impact made a game of it with a pair by Ahlam Abubaker before suffering their second loss of the season.
Tuesday’s score against Xavier Academy was unavailable at press time.
On tap next week is Tuesday’s match against Victoria 2 at 6:30 p.m. at ESA Complex.
The Impact 1 and 2 premier teams also went head-to-head Tuesday and the result was unavailable.
The match marked the season debut for Impact 2, while Impact 1, the 2018 provincial premier silver medallists and second-place EDSA finishers, were winners of two in a row before Sunday's contest against Xavier Academy. The score was not provided at press time.
Both teams are in action Tuesday, as Impact 1 (2-0) lines up against the host Angels Scottish SC 2 at 6:30 pm. and Impact 2 faces Northwest United 2, last year’s provincial champions and premier pennant winners, at 8:15 p.m. at ESA Complex.
The Impact 2 division 1A men’s team tackled Futballers FC on Monday at Confederation Park, but the score wasn't available.
The Impact were coming off a scoreless draw with Santos on Saturday at Victoria High School as Zach Black pulled off several great saves in the back and forth affair.
The Impact (0-1-1) are back on the pitch May 25 against the Spruce Grove Saints at 6 p.m. at ESA Complex.
U18 AAA Cardinals
The defending Baseball Alberta Tier 1 provincial champions are winners of three in a row after the first loss of the season in the Norwest U18 AAA league.
Thursday’s 6-4 setback for the St. Albert Cardinals against the Parkland Twins in Spruce Grove was followed by Friday’s 14-4 victory in six innings over the Northern Lights at Legion Memorial Park.
The Cardinals out-hit the Lights 14-4.
Mike Brisson scored an inside the park home run while batting 3-for-3.
Tyler Herron drove in three runs and cranked out a triple.
Starting pitcher Brady Kobitowich gave up four runs, two earned, on four hits while striking out six and walked four in four innings.
Saturday’s 10-9 extra-inning result against the Red Deer Braves in Sherwood Park saw the Cardinals rally from a 5-0 deficit with seven runs in the top of the seventh and Red Deer replied with a pair to knot the score.
Back-to-back doubles in the eighth resulted in three runs and Red Deer managed only a pair in the bottom of the inning before the Cardinals closed out the win.
Sunday’s 9-4 decision in six innings against the host Sherwood Park A’s was highlighted by Will Gardner going 2-for-3 while also knocking in two runs in the first inning as the Cardinals scored eight runs.
Carson Ironside also drove in a pair.
Tyson Kowaluk, Ashton Finkbeiner, Josh Ironside and Jacob Cebryk took turns on the mound during the two hitter as the A's left 10 men on base.
Saturday in Red Deer, the Cardinals play Calgary Dinos Yellow and Calgary Bandits and Sunday the Red Birds are in Okotoks for a game against the U16 Dawgs.
U15 AAA Cardinals
Tonight’s U15 AAA game between the St. Albert Cardinals and Edmonton Padres starts at 6:30 p.m. at Rundle Park.
Last weekend in Fort McMurray, the Cardinals defeated the host Oil Giants 11-1, lost 5-4 in a walk-off by the Parkland Twins and edged the Padres 7-6.
This weekend the Cardinals are in Camrose for a pair of doubleheaders against the hometown Cougars and U14 Foothills Dawgs.
U15 AA Cardinals
St. Albert Cardinals Red swept Saturday’s U15 AA doubleheader in Spruce Grove to remain undefeated in league play.
In game one, winning pitcher Nik Bowzaylo’s walk-off home run over the left-field fence wrapped up the 16-5 decision against the Edmonton Padres.
The Cardinals improved to 4-0 as Tyler Fitka fanned seven over seven innings in the 10-0 no-hitter against the Parkland Twins.
The next game for the Cardinals is Friday at the Larry Rindero Memorial Tournament at Legion Memorial Park. The first pitch is 6:30 p.m. against the Baseball Alberta Girls in pool B of the eight-team U15 AA division.
