Mission ringette
The St. Albert Mission ringette teams are skating for medals this weekend at the Bernadette Price Memorial Tournament in Saskatoon.The U19AA Mission plays the Regina Bandits, Calgary Rogue and Sherwood Park Power in pool B of the eight-team division.
The Mission’s record was 4-2 before the team's first tournament of the season.
The Mission roster includes three Team Alberta players – Vail Ketsa, Lauren Miller and Jordyn Scott – for the Canada Winter Games, Feb. 13 to March 3 in Red Deer. Mission coach Heather Konkin is also part of the coaching staff.
The U16AA Mission are 5-2-2 when the St. Albert Turkey Ring champions line up against Saskatoon Selects, Calgary Impulse, Sherwood Park Power and Spruce Grove Rage in the five-team round robin.
The U14AA Mission have pool B matches scheduled against the Saskatoon Saints, Manitoba Magic, Winnipeg Wild and Calgary Blue in the 10-team division.
The Mission were Turkey Ring finalists last month.
The next tournament for Mission teams is the 33rd annual Wood Invitational, hosted by the Edmonton Ringette Club, Nov. 23 to 25 at Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre.
Meanwhile, the St. Albert Ringette Association is gearing up to host the Western Canadian Ringette Championships, March 27 to 30 at Servus Credit Union Place.
Teams from the four western provinces compete in the U14AA, U16A, U19A and 18-plus A divisions.
The U14AA Mission were the 2018 silver medallists in Saskatoon.
Bellerose results
The Bellerose Bulldogs finished second in the metro Edmonton division three junior men’s and women’s volleyball playoffs this week.The lady Bulldogs (8-1) dropped a 25-20, 11-25, 21-25, 25-27 decision to the Austin O’Brien Crusaders (9-0) Tuesday at Harry Ainlay High School and the Bellerose men fell 18-25, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 12-15 to the Memorial Marauders on Monday at Louis St. Laurent High School.
Bellerose (7-2) also lost to Memorial (9-0) in three sets in the pool A season-opener Sept. 20 in St. Albert.
The lady Bulldogs and Crusaders were the top teams in their respective pools in league play.
Meanwhile, the Bellerose junior football team ended the metro Edmonton season at 3-4 (118 PF/227 PA) after Wednesday’s 59-0 setback to the Salisbury Sabres (6-0, 354 PF/21 PA) in the division one semifinal at Emerald Hills.
Salisbury also blanked Bellerose 71-0 in the regular season.
Flyers in first
The sixth win in seven games lifted the St. Albert Flyers into top spot in the north division standings of the Alberta Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.The midget 15 Flyers (9-2-1) stood two points in front of the PAC Saints (8-1-1) and Leduc Oil Kings (8-2-1) after Wednesday’s 6-4 win over the Maple Leafs (2-8-1) at Akinsdale Arena.
The Flyers erased a 4-3 deficit with third-period goals by Payton McDonald-Corea on the power play, Jordan Irwin and Chase Visser into an empty net.
Palmer Strang, Breck McKinley and Visser (power play) found the back of the net in the middle frame.
McKinley and Ethan Sundar had two assists apiece.
Sundar is the AMMHL leader in points with 25 and is tied for the lead in goals with 13.
Shots were 54-28 for the Flyers with Carson Ironside (four GA on 17 shots in 33 minutes) and Ethan Kadatz (11 saves) splitting netminding duties.
The Flyers are back on home ice next Saturday against CAC United Cycle (3-6-1) at 5:30 p.m.
Movember Merchants
The St. Albert Merchants have a break in the schedule until Wednesday in the Capital Junior B Hockey League.Faceoff is 8 p.m. against the Stony Plain Flyers (7-7) at Glenn Hall Centennial Arena.
The Merchants (4-8-2) were 0-4-2 in the last six games as the sixth-place team in the west division before hosting the Edmonton Mustangs (8-5-1) Friday. The score was unavailable at press time.
The last win was 8-3 over Stony Plain on Oct. 14 in St. Albert.
Meanwhile, the players and coaches of the Merchants are growing moustaches while raising funds and awareness for Movember. The reasons range from mental health, men’s health awareness, personal experiences with prostate or testicular cancer while supporting dads, brothers and mates in their lives.
