This year's team consists of three returnees from the 2016 division two champions as winners of the first metro Edmonton senior men's volleyball banner in school history, plus five players from last year's junior squad that finished 12-1 as division two semifinalists and four Grade 10s. Eight players are also Grade 12s. This weekend Paul Kane is competing at the University of Alberta tournament. Paul Kane has also applied to enter division one and Monday's seeding tournament of eight teams (two division one and six division two teams from last year) will determine the seven qualifiers for division one. The last-place team will play division two.

The St. Albert Women’s Soccer League semifinals kick-off Sunday at Forest Park field. The division one pairings are Mavericks 09 (12-0) versus Kickers (7-5) and Morinville Ladies (6-5-1) versus Titans (5-6-1). Game times are 4:30 p.m. The division two matches, Devils (8-4) versus Gini’s (2-9-2) and St. Albert Blaze (3-9) versus Mavericks 95 (2-7-2), start at 6:30 p.m. The division finals are Sept. 17 at 5 p.m. at a field to be determined. Last year’s division one playoff cup for Mavericks 09 was the third in a row and fourth in five years. The Devils were crowned the division two champions. Last weekend Maverick 09 won bronze at the Alberta Soccer Association Tier III championship in Calgary and the medal was the fourth in six years at provincials after silver last year and gold in 2014 in Tier III and Tier IV bronze in 2012.

Special Olympics

St. Albert Sport and Rec hosts its first annual golf tournament in support of St. Albert Special Olympics on Sept. 23 at Goose Hummock Golf Resort. The entry fee is $125 per person for 18 holes of golf, power cart, use of the driving range, steak dinner and prizes. The event includes on-course contests and 50/50 draw. Miners go golfing

Interested in golfing with the senior B national champion St. Albert Miners? The winners of consecutive senior B lacrosse Presidents’ Cups tee it up Sept. 23 at Cardiff Golf & Country Club at 12:30 p.m. Registration is $130 per person for the 18-hole tournament and the deadline to enter is Friday.
