The Grant MacEwan Griffins are seeded No. 1 at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association women’s basketball championship with two St. Albert players in the line-up.
Hilary Annich and Kelly Fagan helped the Griffins go 24-0 for the program’s first Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference gold medal.
Annich, a five-foot-seven second-year guard, is a high school product of the St. Albert Skyhawks who averaged 4.70 points in 20 games.
Fagan, a six-foot-one forward, averaged 5.88 points in 24 games as a first-year Griffin from the Paul Kane Blues. She is among seven rookies on the roster.
Nationals are underway this weekend in Lethbridge.
Dan Durham of St. Albert contributed to the podium finish by the Mount Royal University Cougars at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association men’s volleyball championship last weekend in Abbotsford, B.C.
The six-foot-two left-side player was named the man of the match for the Cougars in their four-set victory against Sherbrooke in day two at nationals. The high school product of the Paul Kane Blues registered 12 kills, two blocks, five digs and three service aces to help the Cougars rebound from a tournament opening five-set loss to the host Columbia Bible College Bearcats.
The Cougars went on to beat the Bearcats in three sets for bronze.
In the Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference, Durham ranked sixth in kills-per-set at 3.22 and was named to the all-conference second team in his third season with the Cougars.
Last year the bachelor of science student was second in the conference in kills-per-set at 4.19 as a first team selection.
Next season the Cougars will join the CIS university ranks and will compete in the Canada West conference.
The first year cheer team at Ă©cole Secondaire Saint Marguerite d’Youville (ESSMY) scored high marks at the Alberta Cheerleading Association’s Total Spirit Championships last weekend at West Edmonton Mall.
ESSMY beat out three other teams to win the junior high division 1 large B title.
In large B, teams can have 21 to 24 athletes performing in front of the judges. ESSMY’s team consisted of 24 athletes.
