St. Albert’s biggest winner at the Alberta Winter Games was the U16 SWAG ringette team.
In Sunday’s gold-medal game Sara Derose scored five goals as the SWAG defeated the Medicine Hat Mayhem (Zone 1) 10-8. Lauren Henderson tallied three times and Erica Tosto and Jordynne Hodge added singles. In net was Keira Nystrom.
Going into the game the SWAG had lost three straight games to Medicine Hat, all in overtime in tournament finals.
The gold-medal winning team included Breanne Dagenais, Cassie Pinkoski, Christie Gerlach-Smith, Clare Leitch, Corrine Slocombe, Kate Henderson, Lacee Harris, Marie-Eve Gautier and Sarah Willette.
The SWAG stormed into the final after beating the Rockyford Ringers (Zone 2) 11-1, Lacombe Bamm (Zone 4) 7-3, Edmonton (Zone 6) 6-3 and Calgary Ignite (Zone 3) 8-1.
The SWAG’s overall record is 40-4-1. The next team goal is to represent Zone 5 at provincials next month in Lacombe.
Rounding out the Zone 5 Black Gold/Yellowhead medal winners from St. Albert and Morinville from the Games last weekend at Stony Plain, Spruce Grove and Parkland County are the following athletes:

Sergiu Bruma, judo: gold, male 45 to 50 kg.

Anders Cowper, cross-country skiing: gold, juvenile male 15-16 classic and juvenile sprint; silver, juvenile male relay.
Logan Brubaker, wrestling: silver, male 65 kg; bronze, all-around team.
Danielle Riege, wrestling: silver, female 39 to 42 kg.
Sydney Sexsmith, figure skating: bronze, juvenile ladies’ singles.
Lauren Rogers, wrestling: bronze, female 39 to 42 kg; bronze, all-around team.
Kimberly McLaughlin, badminton: bronze, team event.
Sarah Baker, figure skating: bronze, senior bronze ladies’ free skate.
Chance March, wrestling: bronze, all-around team.

In total, 57 St. Albert, Sturgeon County and Morinville athletes competed for Zone 5.
More than 2,000 athletes from eight zones in the province participated in 24 sports at the Games. For the majority of the athletes it was their first competition at a provincial level.
Tanner Kovacs stopped 34 shots Sunday as the last-place St. Albert Steel posted their fifth win on home ice this season, a 4-0 decision over the Bonnyville Pontiacs.
It’s the first Steel shutout since their inaugural 2007-08 season in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.
Colten Meaver, Dallas Smith, Bryce Sauers and Ryan Berlin scored against Bonnyville (34-18-6) to snap a 12-game winless streak. Attendance was 364 at Performance Arena.
Monday in Lloydminster the Steel lost 7-4 to the Bobcats (37-12-8). Kovacs (2-11, 5.12 GAA) faced 23 shots. Smith, Sauers, Stefan Meunier and Mitch Loose scored.
The Steel started the weekend with a 7-2 loss to the AJHL champion Spruce Grove Saints (44-5-8) in front of 498 fans at Performance Arena. Smith and Jake Rawlins scored and Kovacs made 37 saves.
The last home game for the Steel (8-45-3) was Tuesday against the Drayton Valley Thunder (25-26-6) but the score was unavailable at press time.
The season ends this weekend for the Steel with two games against the Storm (20-34-4) in Grande Prairie.
