The Morinville Lady Wolves chewed up the competition at their invitational basketball tournament last weekend.

In the final the Wolves devoured the Holy Redeemer Rebels 56-25. Amanda Kluthe and Arinn Young led the defence with multiple rebounds against the Edson team.

In the semifinals the Wolves posted their first victory against the Holy Rosary Raiders of Lloydminster by a score of 59-22. Brittany Wilson was among the offensive leaders as the Wolves drained seven three-pointers. Kaitlyn Dryden was also strong on defence.

In the tournament opener, the Wolves jumped out to an early 13-2 lead en route to a 51-36 win against the John Maland Wildcats of Devon. Rebecca Dubord was the top scorer with 24 points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Wolves are 8-4 overall after their third tournament of the season. They also finished second in tournaments in Athabasca and Ponoka.

In the 3A provincial rankings the Wolves are listed as an honourable mention.

At the 2011 provincials the Wolves represented the north central zone for the third straight year and finished the 12-team draw with a 1-2 record.

St. Albert curling product Amanda-Dawn Coderre finished the Alberta Scotties Tournament of Hearts one win short of going to the national championship with the Jessie Kaufman rink.

In Sunday’s final in Leduc, Heather Nedohin of the Saville Sports Centre defeated Kaufman 8-5 victory. Nedohin scored three in the third end to lead 4-1 and in the fifth added a deuce to make it 6-2.

Coderre played second and held the broom for skip’s rocks for Kaufman.

The Saville rink advanced to the final after defeating Nedohin 6-3 in Saturday’s A-B playoff.

A slow start left the St. Albert rink skipped by Doug McLennan scrambling to stay in contention at the northern Alberta senior men’s playdowns last weekend in Camrose.

McLennan, third Wilf Gunderson, second Don Johnston and lead John McKenzie lost their opening game to Don Sutton and in the B bracket fell to Rick Kravontka of the Ottewell, the eventual B event qualifier.

In the C bracket the McLennan foursome defeated Richard Naud of Fort McMurray and Russ LeMessurier of Spruce Grove before bowing out to Reg Enright of Camrose. Enright went on to win the C qualifier for a berth at the 50-plus provincials later this month in Lethbridge.

The trip to northerns was the second in three years for the top team in the Tuesday night men’s league at the St. Albert Curling Club.
