A pair of Paul Kane Blues’ alumni contributed to the medal haul of the Calgary Dinos at the CIS track and field championships last weekend in Windsor.
Niki Oudenaarden won the women’s pentathlon and was awarded bronze in the shot put and Garrett King also collected bronze in the men’s 600 metres.
Oudenaarden, a transfer student from the San Diego State Aztecs, finished the pentathlon with 4,072 points, 262 more than the runner-up, Danielle Delage of the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The finalist for the CIS female field athlete of the year placed first in the shot put at 13.65m and the long jump at 5.85m, was second in the 800m at 2:26.28 and high jump at 1.70m and wound up sixth in the 60m hurdles at 9.04 on day one of the competition.
Oudenaarden also stretched the tape to 14.01m in the shot put on day two. The winner was Brittany Crew of the York Lions at 15.88m
At the Canada West championships earlier in the month, Oudenaarden won the pentathlon with 3,981 points and was the shot put runner-up at 12.95m.
The first-year Dino was also honoured as the Canada West female field athlete of the year.
King’s time of 1:18.56 was faster than his Canada West winning effort of 1:19.99 in the 600m.
The CIS final was too close to call down the stretch as Adam Paul Morris of the Victoria Vikes placed first at 1:18.33 and Alex Ullman of the Windsor Lancers was second at 1:18.52.
The provincial high school wrestling championships featured top-four finishes by a pair of St. Albert Skyhawks last weekend in High River.
Jack McDougall placed second in the 62 kilogram division and Jaydan Manson was fourth in the 59 kg category.
There were 15 grapplers in the 62 kg event and 12 in the 59 kg competition.
At the recent Edmonton zone championships in Stony Plain, McDougall was the 62 kg winner and Manson finished fifth in the 59 kg class.
Podium finishes at zones included Sarah Weihmann of the Paul Kane Blues (first in 61 kg female) and Ben Manchester of the Bellerose Bulldogs (second in 76 kg).
Placing fourth at zones were Markus Littmann of the Blues (120 kg), Lauren Rogers of the Blues (57 kg female), Ann Manchester of the Bulldogs (65 kg female) and Jennessa Carter of the Bulldogs (70 kg female).
Ten gymnasts from St. Albert qualified for provincials after top-12 all-around finishes in the P2 and P3 levels at the northern zones last weekend in Grande Prairie.
The St. Albert Gymnastic Club will be represented by Morgan Petras, who placed 11th all-around in P2 Argo (8-9) while finishing second in the floor event.
The following Dynamyx Gymnastics Club competitors are also going to provincials next month in Lethbridge.
Olivia Schwer, sixth all-around P2 Argo: tied for fourth on bars and vault.
Sarah Pilat, eighth all-around P2 Tyro (10-11): fifth on vault.
Reagan Leonard, 10th all-around P2 Tyro: sixth on vault and beam.
Makenna Benedict, 11th all-around P2 Tyro: third on floor and tied for eighth on vault.
Lauren Nixdorf, eighth all-around P2 Novice (12-13): tied for fourth on beam.
Bridget Krull, 11th all-around P2 Novice: third on beam.
Emily Power, 12th all-around P2 Novice.
Mackenna McNabb, seventh all-around P3 Novice (12-13): second on floor, fourth on vault and sixth on beam.
Janelle Trombley, fifth all-around P3 Open (14-plus): third on beam, tied for sixth on bars and was seventh on floor and vault.
There are no provincials for the P1 level gymnasts at northerns but finishing top-10 all-around in Tyro were Carlea Moffitt (fourth) of the St. Albert club and Hannah Mile (eighth) of the Dynamyx club.
The Running Room 36th annual Indoor Games brought out the best in St. Albert athletes representing their schools last weekend at the Butterdome.
