The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games are under way in St. Albert for 880 athletes, including 48 local competitors.

The breakdown of athletes per event is 112 in athletics, 117 in aquatics, 296 in five-pin bowling, 80 in 10-pin bowling, 22 in powerlifting, 44 in rhythmic gymnastics, 110 in softball and 99 in soccer.

The sports schedule is as follows.

Athletics at Fowler Athletic Park: today 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Aquatics at Fountain Park Recreation Centre: today 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Five-pin bowling at St. Albert Bowling Centre: today 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Ten-pin bowling at Gateway Lanes in Edmonton: today 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Powerlifting at Servus Credit Union Place: today 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rhythmic gymnastics at Servus Place: today 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Softball at Paul Kane High School diamonds: today 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Soccer at Riel Park: today 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Approximately 120 athletes will go on to participate in the 2010 Special Olympics National Summer Games, July 10 to 17 in London, Ont.

Special Olympics Alberta is a non-profit charitable organization committed to enriching the lives of Albertans with an intellectual disability through sport. Athletes develop sport skills, social skills and self-esteem, which assist them in becoming actively involved in recreational, educational and employment opportunities in their communities.

Team Brick

Cassidy Bowes and Ian Mitchell will lace up their skates for Team Brick at the 20th annual Super Novice Invitational Hockey Tournament.

The finest calibre of nine- and 10-year-old hockey players in North America will compete for the championship trophy. The 12-team draw includes teams from Minnesota, Chicago, Connecticut, Detroit, California, Vancouver, Montreal, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Toronto and Edmonton.

Bowes is a centre who played last season for the provincial champion atom AA St. Albert Barons. The Barons were also winners in the Edmonton minor hockey week tournament and the Edmonton Minor Hockey Association's tier 1 league playoffs.

Mitchell is a defenceman who skated for the atom Calahoo Braves. The Albert Lacombe School student has made it to provincials two years in a row, including as an underage player the first year.

Both players are involved with spring hockey with the NAA Attack.

The Brick tournament runs July 1 to 5 at the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace.
