Esso Fun Day The fourth annual Esso Female Hockey Fun Day in St. Albert starts 10 a.m. Sunday with registration at Servus Credit Union Place. The free on-ice introduction for first-time female hockey players of all ages runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The fourth annual Esso Female Hockey Fun Day in St. Albert starts 10 a.m. Sunday with registration at Servus Credit Union Place. The free on-ice introduction for first-time female hockey players of all ages runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Go Auto Arena. Players from the St. Albert Slash, the 2017 Esso Cup midget AAA national champions, will provide instruction. Participants receive a jersey through the Esso Fun Day Program. For more information, contact Trudy at 780-458-8725 or [email protected]. In conjunction with the Esso Fun Day is an equipment drop off and give away event from 9 a.m. to noon. The equipment is to be clean and useable and any leftovers will be donated to Brick Sports Central.

Hurry hard

Sweeping action is only a shot rock away at the St. Albert Curling Club. Audrey Lindsey, the new head ice maker, plans to paint the ice next weekend, followed by the installation of full house logo designs as soon as they arrive at the club. Leading up to the various league openers and curling clinics is the annual general meeting and skip information night on Sept. 18. A list of 2017/18 highlights are as follows: Ladies bonspiel, Nov. 3 to 5. 3 Son's Integra Tire Men's Bonspiel, Nov. 17 to 19. Stick bonspiel, Dec. 7-8 (daytime). Mixed bonspiel, Jan. 25 to 28. NACA men's masters (daytime), Jan. 31 to Feb. 4. High school provincials, March 1 to 3. Irish “Sweep” Stakes and curlers/sponsors appreciation night, March 17. Family bonspiel and Little Rock wrap up, March 18. Third annual Marc Kennedy U18 Classic, which may also have a U21 division, March 23 to 25. Men's women's and mixed playoffs, March 19, 20, 21, 22, 26, 27 and 28 (finals). Swiss Chalet 50+ mixed bonspiel, March 25-26. Canadian Stick Curling Championships, April 2 to 5.

Beach volleyball

The Canadian beach volleyball championships last weekend featured a trio of St. Albert players. Jae-Lyn Visscher and Whitney Follette, a pair of volleyball products of the Paul Kane Blues, competed in the senior nationals at the Canor Sand Centre in North Bay, Ont. and Kylie Morrison of the St. Albert Skyhawks teamed up with Edyn Aasman of Red Deer at the youth nationals in Ottawa. Visscher and Follette combined to win three out of five matches (7 SW/4 SL, 209 PF/193 PA) as one of 13 teams in division one after going undefeated on the tournament circuit this summer. Both players have NCAA division one beach volleyball experience with Jacksonville State University Gamecocks for Visscher and the Arizona State University Sun Devils for Follette. Morrison and Aasman finished 5-2 (10 SW/4 SL, 277 PF/191 PA) in the 32-team U16 division one tournament.
