Mathieu Gautier of the St. Albert Midget A Zone Rams was selected by Team Alberta for the midget lacrosse national championship, Aug. 6 to 12 in Whitby, Ont.
The 18-player roster consists of players born in 2002 and 2001.
Alex Sorochan of the Rams was also named to the Team Alberta practice squad.
Sorochan, Gautier and netminder Jace Simington-Lesanko of the Rams were members of the 2016 Team Alberta silver medallists at the bantam nationals in Saskatoon. Gautier ranked third in team points with 14 and tied for first in goals with nine while Sorochan recorded three goals and one assists.
Meanwhile, the midget Rams were eliminated in the double knockout playoffs in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council by scores of 5-4 against the Sherwood Park Titans and 7-5 against the Parkland Posse as the eventual GELC champions sealed the victory with an empty-net goal.
Gautier registered two goals and three assists and Sorochan notched a pair and added two helpers in the two games for the Rams, 5-7-3 overall as the third-ranked team in the playoffs.
A six-goal deficit after the first period was too big for the St. Albert Crude to overcome in Thursday's loss in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The Red Deer Rampage (12-3) potted a pair on the power play and tallied twice shorthanded in the opening 20 minutes, en route to the 12-7 decision at Akinsdale Arena.
It was 8-0 for the Red Deer Rampage before Liam Potgieter put the Rams on the board at 12:21 of the middle frame with the first of his two goals on the night.
Tyler Dion also fired a pair and Jorden McCuaig, Jesse Ott and Bryce Schmermund, an affiliate with St. Albert Midget A Zone Rams, slotted singles as the Crude dropped to 4-10-1 in the junior B Tier I north standings.
The Crude were also winless in seven games when they played the host Calgary Mountaineers (6-9) Friday but the score was unavailable at press time.
The last home game for the Crude is Thursday versus the Fort Saskatchewan Rebels (3-11-1) at 8:30 p.m.
The St. Albert Mustangs Track and Field Club achieved podium finishes at the recent junior provincials in Leduc.
