The Bellerose Bulldogs returned home from the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association Tier 1 women's rugby championship as the consolation winners.

Keely Mazzolini-Flynn ran in two tries as the Bulldogs beat the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute Rams 30-17 in Saturday's consolation final at Lynn Davies Rugby Park for fifth-place overall in the tournament.

Evelyn Scouten, Maddie Lovsin, Rachel Hierlmeier and Payton McNeill also scored for the metro Edmonton division one semifinalists.

The Bev Facey Falcons and McNally Tigers also represented the metro league in the Tier 1 provincials.

Facey, winner of six consecutive division one banners, lost the championship match 20-5 to the Raymond Comets and McNally won the bronze playoff 19-12 over the Western Canada Redhawks.

The Comets were ranked first in the eight-team draw and in the opening match defeated the eighth-ranked Bulldogs 27-0.

In the consolation bracket, the Bulldogs knocked off the Lindsay Thurber Raiders 10-7 in the semifinals.

Josie Pusch of the Bulldogs was recognized as a tournament MVP.

It was also the grad weekend for Bellerose so the Bulldogs fielded a lineup of Grade 10 and 11 Bulldogs and St. Albert Skyhawks from the 4-3 team that lost 19-10 to Facey in the division one semifinals.

McNeill is also a Grade 12 Skyhawk.

The Sturgeon Spirits competed for bronze medals in the men's and women's divisions at the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association Tier 2 rugby championships last weekend at the Chestermere and Strathmore high schools.

The lady Spirits won 24-17 against the Hunting Hills Lightning and the Sturgeon men lost 24-14 to the Sir Winston Churchill Bulldogs.

The lady Spirits kicked off provincials with a 14-5 decision over the Chinook Coyotes in the round of eight before suffering a 36-17 setback to Foothills Falcons in the semifinals.

The Sturgeon men defeated the Strathmore Spartans 43-0 in the opening round of eight before falling 14-5 to the Bow Valley Bobcats in the semifinals.

The Sturgeon men's and women's teams were both 7-0 entering provincials as the metro Edmonton division two champions.

The St. Albert Rangers are gaining ground on the front-runners in the division 1A men's table with points in six consecutive matches.

The Rangers (2-1-4) have strung together two wins and four ties after kicking off the season with the 3-1 loss to E & C United (2-2-2) in the Edmonton District Soccer Association.

Monday the Rangers defeated the Ital-Canadians 3-1 at Foote Field after tying the Drillers 2-2 Saturday at the ESA Complex.

Noah Boyko potted a pair for six goals in three matches and Dan Cwartkowski scored the go-ahead marker against Ital (0-6-1).

Bokyo and newcomer Tatenda Muchenje found the back of the net against the Drillers (0-2-4).

The next match is Monday versus Man City (5-0-1) at 6:30 p.m. at the ESA Complex.

The teams battled to a 2-2 draw May 27.

The David Hearn Junior Series, hosted by the Canadian Junior Golf Association last weekend at Coal Creek Golf Course in Ryley, featured the following local participants.

Brooke Brezovski of St. Albert placed second overall via count back in U15 bantam girls. Brezovski shot 87 and 83 for a two-day score of 170.

Kaitlyn Wingnean was the division winner at 167 (82-85).

Belle Brezovski was seventh at 218 (115-103).

Alicia Easthope finished third in U19 junior girls at 163 (79-84) and the division leader was Kehler Koss of Calgary at 149 (73-76).

Theo Leakos of Sturgeon County was seventh in U15 bantam boys at 190 (96-94) and Connor Ackroyd of St. Albert placed 12th in U19 junior boys at 150 (78-72).

Meanwhile, Ethan Wilson of St. Albert was the top finisher in the peewee boys' division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour provincial stop in Red Deer last weekend.

Wilson, 12, carded scores of 75 and 76 for a two-day total of 151.

The runner-up was Brandin Stahl of Priddis at 156 (77-79).
