The online registration deadline for the 28th annual St. Albert Triathlon is Aug. 6 at midnight at www.zone4.ca.
The Aug. 13 events at Fountain Park Recreation Centre are the sprint distance (750-metre swim, 20-kilometre bike and five-km run), try-a-tri (250m swim, 10-km bike and 2.5-km run) and team relay.
Last year 70 males and 68 females completed the sprint distance, compared to 192 triathletes in 2015.
The race winner was Ian Elm, an Edmonton firefighter and former Sturgeon Composite High School teacher, in one hour, two minutes and 16 seconds and the runner-up was Adeline Maunder of St. Albert at 1:05:12.
The triathlon is presented by the St. Albert Road Runners and Triathlon Club and is sanctioned by the Alberta Triathlon Association.
Volunteers can also register for the triathlon at www.starrt.com.
The winning team at the inaugural U16 Western Challenge featured three players with St. Albert minor football connections.
Defensive back Jackson Ganton, receiver Kolby Hurford and quarterback Ewen Vanderheide contributed to Team Alberta’s 3-0 record at the recent tournament in Lethbridge.
Alberta defeated Saskatchewan 48-3, Manitoba 38-0 and British Columbia 28-0.
Last year in bantam football, Ganton and Hurford played for the St. Albert 49ers and Vanderheide was the co-MVP of the Sherwood Park Rams, the Tier 1 provincial champions. The trio were selected to the 40-man U16 roster after competing in the Football Alberta Bantam Bowl in May with the north all-star team.
