The St. Albert Minor Football Association is hosting a free mom and child football orientation session today at Riel Recreation Park.

Youths six to 14 years old and moms of football players will participate in hands-on demonstrations regarding equipment, training and safety in the sport.

Moms and players are on the field for drills and games from 11 a.m. to noon before lunch is served.

The players return to the field at 1 p.m. while the moms will hear from guest speakers at the SAMFA clubhouse.

The activities wrap up at 3 p.m.

The St. Albert Senior Cardinals swing into action Sunday in the Alberta West Central Baseball Association.

The season opener against the Edmonton Pirates starts at 6 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park.

The 30-plus league consists of eight teams.

Eight players from the St. Albert Minor Football Association will huddle up at the ABC Border Bowls on May 27 at the University of Lethbridge.

Justin Baniak, Kristoff Baniak, Alex Bennet, Josh Karavidas, Dave Kociuba, Matt Kociuba, Max Taylor and Tristan Young will be joined by SAMFA coaches’ Jon Baniak, Mike King, John Kociuba, Steve Maki, Rob Patrick, Geoff Richer and Sylvain Villeneuve.

The ABC Border Bowls allow Alberta and B.C. players, coaches and leagues to compete and share their different talents, ideals and philosophies on the gridiron in four different age categories: Young Stars (grades 6-7), Future Stars (grades 8-9), Rising Stars (grades 10-11) and Current Stars (mostly grade 12s and some grade 11s).

It’s also a showcase opportunity for universities, colleges and junior teams to check out the older players.

A five-goal outburst in the third period propelled the St. Albert Midget A Zone Rams to their third win in a row in the Greater Edmonton Lacrosse Council.

The Rams out-scored the Edmonton Warriors 5-1 in the last 20 minutes of Wednesday’s 8-6 win at Kinex Arena.

Ronin Pusch netted the team’s last two goals with 10:48 to play to make it 7-5 and with 1:38 remaining to close out the scoring.

The rest of the goals were Kolby Nestor’s second of the night, Kieran Harris’ unassisted effort and Bryce Schmermund’s hat-trick marker.

The Rams (4-2-1) are the top midget A team and the Warriors (2-3) are third in the five-team standings.

The teams meet again May 23 at 8:30 p.m. at Kinex Arena.

Online registration is open for the 26th annual St. Albert Kids of Steel Triathlon on June 11.

This year’s triathlon is also a junior draft legal event for the Canada Summer Games qualifier and provincial junior championships for 16- to 19-year-olds, as well as the provincial youth (13 to 15) championships.

The KOS, hosted by the St. Albert Triathlon Association, starts at 8 a.m. at Fountain Park Recreation Centre and the last swimmers start racing at 10:30 a.m.

Youths from four to 19 compete as individuals or with a team on a swim-bike-run course that varies in distance according to age group.

Teams are divided into the Grades 1 to 3, 4 to 6 and junior/senior high school.

The race distances for the junior elite (16 to 19) and U23 (20 to 23) divisions are 750 metres in the pool, 18.4-kilometres on the bike and the five-km run.

KOS participants must be members of the Alberta Triathlon Association.

Visit www.stalbertkidsofsteel.com to register or for more information.

Last year 221 triathletes and five teams finished the KOS, compared to 241 and six teams in 2015.

Volunteers are also required to make the KOS a success. The minimum age to volunteer is 16.
