Brendon Thera-Plamondon of St. Albert was selected by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League draft Sunday.
The high school product of the St. Albert High Skyhawks was picked in the seventh round, 59th overall, as one of a team-record nine Calgary Dinos taken in the draft and that included 19 Canada West players.
The six-foot-one and 223-pound receiver and long snapper missed the bulk of the 2016 season with an injury and returned in week seven to grab four catches for 55 yards and a touchdown against the Saskatchewan Huskies.
Thera-Plamondon also added five catches for 50 yards and a TD in two conference playoff games as the Dinos advanced to the Vanier Cup, only to lose 31-16 to the Laval Rouge et Or in Hamilton.
Thera-Plamondon’s last season with the Skyhawks was 2012 when the team was the runner-up in the metro Edmonton league’s Carr conference final and the Tier III (school population 450 to 749) Alberta Bowl.
The two-time St. Albert Catholic High School male athlete of the year was also the football team’s rookie of the year and twice was the recipient of the offensive MVP and hardest worker awards.
Thera-Plamondon also saw action with the St. Albert Storm midget spring league team while in high school.
The St. Albert Miners tallied 13 times before the Calgary Raiders found the back of the net in Sunday’s senior B match in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.
The first goal for the Raiders was scored at 7:44 into the second period of the 17-4 rout by the Miners at Go Auto Arena.
The defending Presidents’ Cup national champions posted period leads of 6-0 and 13-2.
Keegan Bal led all scorers with four goals and four assists.
The second of two goals by Cam Sedgwick to open the scoring was a shorthanded effort at the 9:16 mark.
Captain Jordan Cornfield struck twice and picked up four assists against the winless Raiders.
Tom Buckley, Sean Reid and Gordon Cornfield also posted a pair each and Nick Petz and Reagan Harding notched singles.
The Miners are 2-0 to start the season following their 27th consecutive win in league play, playoffs and nationals after last year’s 7-7 tie against the Rockyview Knights on April 30 in St. Albert to kick-off the 2016 regular season.
The Miners continue their five-game homestand this weekend against the Calgary Mountaineers at 8 p.m. Saturday and the Knights (2-1) at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
Last year the Miners, the host team for nationals in Leduc, swept the Mountaineers in the best-of-three RMLL provincial final.
James Robillard carded the winning score in the junior male division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour/Alberta series opener at Paradise Canyon Golf Resort in Lethbridge last weekend.
The Sandpiper Golf & Country Club member shot rounds of 67-73 for a total score of 140.
Josh Berze of Calgary placed second at 140 (72-72).
Robillard, 18, has committed to the NCAA division two University of West Georgia Wolves of the Gulf South Conference this fall.
Alicia Easthope, another Sandpiper product, finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the 15 to 18 female division at 167 (82-85).
The winner was Taylor Stone, 17, of Calgary at 157 (78-79).
Easthope, 18, will join the NCAA division two University of Montevallo Falcons of Alabama in the Gulf South Conference this fall.
Connor Ackroyd, 16 of the Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club also tied for eighth in the juvenile male division at 152 (72-80).
Mason Harder of Lethbridge placed first at 141 (69-72).
The St. Albert Storm ended the midget spring league season on a winning note Saturday night at Commonwealth Stadium.
The Storm evened their record at 3-3 with the 29-8 decision against the West Edmonton Raiders.
Unlike previous years, there are no playoff placement games in the Capital District Minor Football Association.
Quade Kozak fired touchdown passes of 29 yards to Travis Heggart and nine yards to Cordel Callioux in the first quarter and hit Ben Vanleeuwen for an eight-yard score in the second quarter.
Kozak completed 15 of 22 attempts for 203 yards and was intercepted once.
In four games, Kozak amassed 1,034 passing yards while going 63-for-98 for 12 TDs and four interceptions.
Heggart and Logan McCullough tied for the team lead in receiving TDs with seven apiece.
Overall, Heggart caught 22 passes for 404 yards in five games and McCullough had 25 receptions for 481 yards in six games.
Callioux led the Storm in receiving yards Saturday with 104 on nine receptions and Heggart had 52 yards on three grabs.
Kozak also ran three yards into the endzone in the fourth quarter and the third conversion by VanLeeuwen made it 27-8. VanLeeuwen’s point-after attempt following his TD was blocked.
VanLeeuwen gained 133 yards on 14 carries as the Storm rushed for 226 yards overall.
VanLeeuwen collected a team-high 307 yards on 42 carries in six games and Kozak led the Storm in rushing TDs with six on 33 runs for 217 yards.
McCullough also scored three TDs on 18 handoffs for 272 yards
The Storm closed out the scoring Saturday with Heggart’s safety on the punter.
Heggart also sacked quarterback Russell Dixon, who played for the junior Paul Kane Blues last year, for a 35-yard loss when the Raiders were third and goal from the Storm’s five-yard line in the third quarter.
Zach Froese and Karl Haasz, a pair of north team players for the May 22 Bantam Bowl at Foote Field, were also credited with one sack apiece and Cole Precht picked off a pass.
Bronson Wilkie recorded 10 tackles for 45 in six games and Precht and Dylan McCoy had four each. Precht finished with 20 tackles in six games.
In week two, the Storm lost 30-20 to the Raiders (2-4) in Spruce Grove.
Last year the Storm were 0-7 and four losses were by shutouts.
The midget spring league is for players in grades 9, 10 and 11.
