A pair of past and current St. Albert Catholic High School students were selected to the 2015 Golf Canada development squad program.
Tyler Saunders and AJ Armstrong are among six males and five females on the U22 development squad that is designed to help facilitate the continued development of Canada’s top young golfers.
Saunders, 19, a freshman on the Texas State University Bobcats’ golf team, won the Alberta Men’s Amateur, Alberta Junior Boys Championship and the PGA of Alberta Junior Masters this season.
The Glendale Golf & Country Club member also tied for third at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship, placed fourth at the Alberta Open, tied for fifth at the CN Future Links Ontario Championship, tied for sixth at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship and tied for 18th at the Canadian Men’s Amateur.
Armstrong, 17, a Grade 12 student who has committed to Washington State University, tied for third at the Alberta Men’s Amateur and shared fourth place at both the CN Future Links Western Championship and Canadian Junior Boys Championship.
The member of the Sturgeon Valley and Royal Mayfair golf clubs finished fifth at the Alberta Junior Boys Championship and ninth at the CN Future Links Pacific Championship and tied for 19th at both the PGA of Alberta Junior Masters and Alberta Open Championship.
Marisa Dick of St. Albert was recognized at the Alberta Gymnastics Federation awards banquet for her contributions during the 2013/14 season.
The Ortona Gymnastics Club member was honoured as the National Open (16-plus) provincial champion and the all-around silver medallist in the National Open division at the Canadian championships.
At nationals in May, Dick won silver on beam and finished fourth on vault and bars and seventh on floor with second-place Alberta in the team category.
The Grade 12 Paul Kane High School student was listed as the fourth-best gymnast in the Alberta rankings. She can only compete at provincials and nationals due to her international commitments with Trinidad and Tobago and is restricted to the open division at nationals.
Because of the dual citizenship Dick represented Trinidad at the 2013 world championships in Antwerp, Belgium. Last year’s provincial female gymnast of the year placed 50th out of 81 females in the all-around event, the highest ranking ever by a Trinidad gymnast.
The first international medals of her career were awarded at the Commonwealth Invitational in June in Perth, Scotland. She tied Emma White of Scotland for gold on bars, shared silver with India McPeak of Northern Ireland on beam and received bronze for vault and all-around as the first Trinidad female gymnast to medal internationally.
Dick also competed for Trinidad at the Senior Pan American Gymnastics Championships in Toronto in late August and finished 29th all-around despite not completing her last event. She was halfway through the floor routine but on the second tumbling line tore an Achilles tendon on takeoff.
An illness prevented Dick from representing Trinidad at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
